Wraith Squadron by Aaron Allston

These X-Wing stories just really haven’t captured me. I feel like they try too hard to be spy missions and I just want to read a sort of “Top Gun-planes in space” style mission. We got some of that in the end but I hope we get a worthy story soon.

The book was ok. The setting is one of the cooler thriller settings but I never found much motive in the story and that’s disappointing

I hate how they’ve handled this character and honestly how they treat the 24-25th century Starfleet in Kurtzman’s Trek

I really enjoyed the first book but unfortunately this book didn’t do it for me. Personally, I’m not a big fan of dream/memory sequences and it felt like half the book was a memory and I just found it boring. None of the intrigue from the first book was really here

So I’ll admit in terms of plot this didn’t “wow” me and I’m still not quite sure where the story is going. However, the characters are some of the most interesting I’ve read in a while. Every character seemed to have a different voice and i appreciate that because it keeps the book interesting and I can say there was never a POV I was trying to rush through because they bored me.

Excellent follow up to my all time favorite sci fi book. This story is obviously quite a bit shorter but an appropriate ending to Paul’s journey started in Dune. Paul is someone I found myself pitying. Plagued with power he tried to avoid and visions he couldn’t escape and a terror that he helped unleash that made him a monster but also someone trying to survive and he essentially looses everything.

I really enjoyed this short story. Essentially a story about a father and his sons and wanting to protect them. It was short but very focused

I thought the last 2 books were VERY slow and a little pointless at times but this is one I really enjoyed. I believe this is the shortest WoT book outside of the prequel novel and it helped the story move. I enjoyed the Rand, Elayne and Min POVs (although the relationship is VERY weird). Nynaeve was probably the least annoying she has been the entire series and that was a plus. The only negative was Mat’s POV which mostly consists of him ogling women and trying to leave.

I was really pumped to read this book given the rave reviews I’ve seen but I didn’t feel the same way. It’s certainly epic with multiple interesting storylines but I never connected with the characters (at least the main ones). Calen whom I enjoyed in the first 2 books just continued to bug me saying he didn’t want to be used and I never felt like that was being done and while his love of friends and family is admirable I understood why others were concerned with the bigger picture and threat. Maybe if those that kept secrets from him felt more nefarious I would’ve understood but that never felt like the case. I wish some of the characters felt more villainous as it would separated them from the heroes but so many of the characters seem to feel the same in terms of emotion and decision making.
