Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West by Gregory Maguire
4.0
I loved it! I liked that as you were reading, you almost forgot that this was the Wizard of Oz story until the end of a chapter when Maguire would toss in a line that would remind you where you were in the story. I also loved the way it gets you thinking about how history is told by the winners and that doesn't make them right.
When You Are Engulfed in Flames by David Sedaris

This was awesome. I love the description of their trip to Tokyo and Sedaris quitting smoking. This is laugh out loud, read out loud funny.
Room by Emma Donoghue

I liked it! It was definitely a little freaky... I mean, how couldn't it be? Mom and son imprisoned in a locked shed by their evil kidnapper and never leaving. But I really enjoyed the way it was written. I think the most impressive thing about it is how well Emma Donoghue captures the voice and internal world of Jack. The occasional snippets of the outside world breaking into his world were very well done and usually pretty humorous. Also, I like the way that it allows us to take a step back and look at the world we have created for ourselves. What's important, what's not, what's polite, what's not, what defines lying and personal boundaries etcetera. When the book began I wasn't sure I was going to enjoy it, but I was quite pleased in the end. It felt well resolved.
