Born Confused by Tanuja Desai Hidier
4.0
I really liked this book! It started to drag a bit in the middle, but overall it was engaging and fairly quick. I found the writing delightful (fabulous decorative in that way that I imagine India in my head), but what I really enjoyed was the insight it gives on first/second generation Indian Americans. At it's core, this book is the classic coming of age story, but it's so modern. There's drinking and weed smoking (hilarious!) and love and sex and parents and lesbians and dancing and photography and on and on. I recommend this book for anyone, not just teenagers. It's a great story about learning who you are and who your parents are.

This book was awesome! I cried crocodile tears in the coffee shop while I read it. Great writing, hilarious insight into being a teen guy, into being a Native American. I recommend this to everyone!

Well, since I've been talking about reading ladders and read-alikes, I would put this book on a reading ladder with The Giver and Room.

I loved it. I know there are plenty of gay people out there who hate it because it's not a realistic novel. But neither is Harry Potter. And this book made me feel good. It made me smile to think about a gay-topia where this could be real. I don't think every novel has to be a problem novel. Some should be a "Gay? Fine by me!" novel. : o)

I recently said that everyone I have ever known who has read The Giver has liked... and of course a party pooper raised her hand and said she didn't like it. : o ) So now I will say that with one exception, everyone who has read this book has liked it! I don't want to be a library nerd, but how awesome would this be as a reading ladder anchor...
American Gods by Neil Gaiman

Awesome! There's so many layers. Neil Gaiman writes like he's been alive for ten thousand years.
