I was surprised and intrigued by the twist at the halfway point. It's something I've experienced in danmei, but not YA fantasy. This book feels like it should be fully Sapphic, I can't imagine any of these women ending up with a man.
Our male love interest,
Crow
,  could've used more time to develope. Zephyr catches feelings very fast.

This is even better than I was hoping it would be. There was a lot happening in 123~ pages.

mmromance, toxic lesbians, a third-wheeling wingman fujoshi, great world-building, character backstories, omegaverse inclusions and just the right amount of gore sprinkled in.

I was immediately impressed with how real the world and characters felt, and the variety of creatures that were introduced. The Viafir were true nightmare fuel. I'm very interested in them and hope we get an art book with illustrations included for them.

In would say this book was a fair bit worse than the first.

Yun being the secondary baddie would've been more motivating if his wouldn't have been so anticlimactic. I'm also disappointed that Kyoshi didn't break through to him, with him sacrificing himself or something.

I definitely find myself wondering more about Kuruk and what exactly Yangchen did to cause the spirits to behave the way they did during his reincarnation cycle.

I would've enjoyed focusing on one set of characters instead of a kyoshi having so many acquaintances that travel around with her. I'm not sure what the purpose of the Flying Opera Company was since they were replaced with Jinpa until the last second of the book where they showed up to nearly all be casualties of Yun.

“Oh,” Kyoshi said in response to the worst news she’d ever heard in her life.
(chapter 4)

Rangi poked her in the small of the back. “Promise me you’ll never throw your life away over a boy,” she said, her voice coated thickly with disdain.
(chapter 16)

The writing is really funny, very dark and the lesbians are great. I'm glad I read this during pride month.

The beginning and middle are very strong, but the ending was a little bit sudden for me.

Jianzhu be killed by Yun who is suddenly alive again?
