" ...Wang Xi came in to take a look... only to be faced with Prince Jing in a state of undress, face flushed pink, and fish in hand. "
" 'Your Highness, you can't! The fish is so small! It won't be able to take it!' "
(page 118)

"Xiaoyu had nibbled him, and he wanted to nibble back."
(page 387)

I went into this fully expecting to be let down by this novel, and then I read all of it in a day. If you like svsss, I'm confident you'll like it because this series is already so much better. This is such a compelling romance between a man and his pet fish. It's also so funny, and Wang Xi is a great wingman for Li Yu and Prince Jing.
I look forward to the second Prince being humiliated by our Master fish in the rest of the series.

This was somehow extremely long-winded for how short the novel was. It's not hard to follow, but I didn't find it had almost any emotional impact on me. It's also first person and I never got used to it.

Song Yao: "Hengwen, would you still love me if I was a worm cockroach?".

The ending was kind of funny, I feel like
Hengwen should have chosen the fox though.

Characters
  • Zhao Yunlan - The Guardian /
    Kunlan
  • Shen Wei -
    The Soul Executing Emissary
  • Wang Zheng - Head of HR / Ghost girl with neck stitches
  • Sangzen -
Wang Zheng's ghost boyfriend. He works in the library and can't read Chinese characters.
  • Guo Changcheng - incompetent new hire
  • Chu Shuzhi -
    to be filled in
  • Daqing - the cat
  • Lin Jing - the monk
  • Zhu Hong - serpent lady
  • Lao-Wu - nighttime doorman
  • Lao-Li - daytime doorman

Chu Shuzhi waggled his eyebrows at Zhao Yunlan. Shen Wei had picked up on the very first ring. That was the level of attentiveness one couldn't even get from their own father. This was what Zhao Yunlan called heartbreak?
(page 37)
Zhao Yunlan being drunk and retrained by Daqing sitting on his stomach and Guo Changcheng holding him down while Chu Shuzhi calls Shen Wei to come get him.
Chu Shuzhi hung up and struck a salacious pose, blowing a kiss at Zhao Yunlan. "He's at your beck and call. You've got this in the bag. Don't forget my matchmaker's feast."
Zhao Yunlan jabbed a trembling finger at him. "Y-you bitch. "
(page 37)
Shen Wei shows up and Chu Shuzhi opens the door and pushes Zhao Yunlan headfirst into his arms.
But even if he couldn't stand up straight, Zhao Yunlan still had some fight in him. He pointed back into the office at Chu Shuzhi. "Just you wait, you little bitch. "
(page 38)

Shen Wei's eyes were still locked on him. "If you must die, it must be in my arms and by my hand. "
"Please shut up. " Zhao Yunlan applied heavy pressure to Shen Wei's wrist. "Why do you go insane at the drop of a hat?"
(page 52)
Confession scene and agreeing to move in with Zhao Yunlan. Shen Wei viciously bit his own wrist and drew blood while hugging him.

But if it was something Zhao Yunlan had made, even if it were a bowl of rat poison, Shen Wei was still willing to eat it all without the tiniest change in expression - though he made sure to choose the most normal cup noodles offered.
(page 55)
Zhao Yunlan "cooked" five different cup noodles for Shen Wei in the morning. Shen Wei was shocked Zhao Yunlan hadn't died of food poisoning yet.

[Chu Shuzhi]had been all too happy to watch the chaos unfold and was vibrating from head to toe with uncharacteristic excitement. "Was that the Ghost Army just now? Who summoned them? Are they crazy? That was so fucking hot!"
(page 88-89)

Seeing Daqing enter [the library], Sangzen greeted him earnestly. "Henlo, cat."
"Henlo, stutterer," the cat replied.
Sangzen stopped dead. Wang Zhen was a quiet, refined girl who would never teach him insults, so the term wasn't familiar to him. With perfect sincerity, he asked, "What i-is a slutterer?"
Daqing: "It means 'good bro'."
Sangzen nodded in understanding, then enthusiastically gave it a try. "Oh,  henlo, cat slutterer!"
(page 110-111)

By the time they left the hospital, Zhao Yunlan, like some sort of cockroach, had adjusted to his blindness. "
(page 127)

Daqing: "What's wrong with your eyes?"
Zhao Yunlan: "Oh, that features been temporarily deactivated."
(page 129)

I really enjoy a mystery-solving duo with
secret identities.

So far I've felt this series is very melancholy. It actually reminds me of the feeling mdzs had where you can tell the mmc's are holding a lot of pain in their hearts, but you're not sure why yet.
The other thing that reminds me of mdzs is their first kiss being caused by alcohol hehe.

I think this will be a series that I really enjoy rereading.
------------------------
Reread 1:
Daqing extended his stumpy legs and gave chase, meowing in complaint. "Are you blind, you gay fool?"
(page 60)
Daqing is the cat.

"Fuck your mother's second uncle!" Zhao Yunlan snarled.
After a moment of silence, Lin Jing pleaded sincerely, "Boss... my mother's second uncle has long passed, so please forsake these empty forms of wrath and lust."
(page 130)
Lin Jing is the monk.

"Even if you wanted to bomb the Pentagon, no one in the world could say you did something wrong as long as you didn't act on it. We don't have thought crimes here."
(page 162)
While interrogating the university girl (Li Qian) about
using the reincarnation dial to give life back to her grandmother, and then murdering her when that didn't work out well.

He was tired of people throwing themselves at him, so Shen Wei's behavior was a turn-on. The more reserved and passive the professor was, the hotter Zhao Yunlan's heart burned.
(page 186)

Zhu Hong sighed. "There he goes, off to screw around again."
(page 186)
Zhu Hong is
the Serpent lady (well, monthly)

How did you know I don't live in this direction?
After a solid half minute, Shen Wei said stiffly, "I didn't... think anyone lived in that direction."
He said this while pointing directly toward not one but three long-established residential neighborhoods. So many people lived in that direction, in fact, that it was one of the most notorious areas in Dragon City for traffic jams.
(page 206)

What kind of shoddy east-meets-west doctor prescribed western medication after just feeling his pulse?
(page 222)

Shen Wei pulled his hand free. "How will you explain to your parents one day that you're always getting tangled up with men? If your family line ends with you, when you enter the autumn of your life, who will care for you in your old age?"
Incredulous, Zhao Yunlan asked, "Explain what to whom? When I'm old I'll take my pension and live in a retirement home. It's not my job to keep the human race from going extinct, Shen-laoshi. Are you a closeted homophobe? Wake up! We're not in the Qing Dynasty anymore!"
(page 226)

"It's more than one layer deep, [Wang Zheng] said.
Zhao Yunlan's blood went cold. "I've never seen someone add a top bunk to a huge communal bed. "
(page 259)
Wang Zheng (Head of HR) is the ghost girl with stitches around her neck.
When the SID and Shen Wei's class trip ends up going to Qingxi Village, Wang Zheng's hometown, they camp out in a cabin on the mass grave of heads from the conflict between Sangzen (her ex, a slave of her family) and his tribe after the uprising of Wang Zheng's royal family members. Sangzen systematically killed them all because they semi-democratically voted to behead Wang Zheng for being a living member of the royal family and suspecting her of bewitching Sangzen. Sangzen uses the second of the four hallowed artifacts, the Mountain-River Awl, to contain all the souls of the people in his tribe. Wang Zheng feels responsible. Our Lord Emissary takes it with after a cryptic battle with a masked ghost-faced figure and his youchu (monstrous creatures born from chaos).

The book ends with
The reveal of Shen Wei being the Soul-Executing Emissary after his soul pops out of his body because of a drunk makeou  session. Zhao Yunlan panic and take him to the hospital, and then he's melancholy about his situationship becoming more complicated.

Three characters I didn't grab quotes regarding:
Lao-Wu
the ghoul nighttime doorman we meet at the beginning with the joker-face and no tongue.

Chu Shuzhi book 2 spoilers
(I'll fill this in later)

Guo Changcheng, the cowardly new hire comedy relief character.

My biggest problem with this series has always been how Shen Qingqiu's character is written. I find his inner monologs to be more insufferable than funny even though this is written as satire/comedy.
Instead of just going through the plot of the story we get Shen Qingqiu going "yadda yadda yadda, anyway some time has passed and now we're doing a thing and this is the expected end result" while he sort of argues with the system.
In comparison to svsss, I've read 2ha where the main protagonist is reborn as his younger self and has insight on events that other characters don't. Meatbun writes this very well as unsurprisingly things end up changing, or the protagonist goes through growth where he realizes he misunderstood things that happened in his past.
Svsss is written in a way that nothing feels real and Shen Qingqiu doesn't seem like he seriously engages or connects with the world and characters. We briefly get some glimpses here and there into Luo Binghe's character and how he's affected by Shen Yuan transmigrating into Shen Qingqiu's body, but most of the character growth takes place "off-screen" in montages or timeskips. It really does a great job of seeming like an authentic "isekai" since I think volume 1 sounds better summarized than actually reading through it.
Shen Qingqiu could also hate women less. I know he's closeted, but dude needs to chill.

This book was so unfair to Caesar.
I'm glad everything worked out, but he really had to work for everything in his life.

I'm excited for the next book, I hope Jeremiah gets a "redemption" because his attitude this book was not it.

This was fantastic and I think it'll be hard for book 3 to top it.

Dominick and Jeremiah are still my favourite characters.

VAMPIRE PUPPER!!

Can I just say I really enjoy a character catching a fired arrow and throwing it back at the person who fired it? If I could keep reading books where that happened I'd be very happy.

Demi and Hamilton had weird foreplay at the end with killing Julius and it was amazing.

This is a really enjoyable read. Easy to digest with a lot packed into 400 pages.
I think I would've enjoyed a bit more time for Hamilton and Demiesius to fall for each other, but that's because I'm a sucker for slow burns.
Dominick was my favourite character so I'm really excited for book 2 where he should get a lot of focus.
