Olu's Teacher: A Story about Starting Preschool by Jamel C. Campbell and illustrated by Lydia Mba [Candlewick Press #gifted]

As Olu goes to preschool for the first time, he is nervous and worried about what the teacher will be like in this strange new place. But as he begins to have fun with his friends, he discovers that the teacher is fun, kind, and welcoming - and that perhaps school is going to be a fun place to be. This picture book is a great read for young readers who are entering a new place for the first time.

Who's in Charge? by Stephanie Allain and Jenny Klion and illustrations by Marissa Valdez [Candlewick Press #gifted]

In Who's in Charge?, readers are empowered by the questions and repetitive responses of "I am!" as they understand that they are in charge of their bodies. In what they do with it and how others may interact with them. This is a great book to start the discussion about consent and young children having agency over their bodies.

Flora is off to school and she's excited but she also finds that she just needs a little more reassurance in the form of a hug or fun goodbye from her family. This story is perfect for young children who may be going to daycare or school for the first time ever.

When Kikelomo goes to school, she is excited to share her name with her classmates as they all take turns. When it comes to her turn though, another classmate makes fun of her and says that her name is not normal and too long. Upset, she returns home and tells her parents who remind her of where her name comes from and the meaning of her name - cherished. She is reminded of all the people in her life who cherish her and love her - her name being a reminder of that love. She proudly returns to school the next day to share with her classmates what her name means and inspires the others to share where their names come from as well.

The Dictionary Story by Oliver Jeffers and Sam Winston [Candlewick Press #gifted]

The Dictionary doesn't understand why, unlike other books, he doesn't get to tell a story. So the alligator in the Dictionary decides to escape its pages and goes after the donut who runs away. As more and more things from the Dictionary escape and join the chase, chaos occurs and the Dictionary wonders if it was all a mistake and needs to bring everything back to its organized, alphabetical order. This was a really fun and amusing story. On a further look, one can see that even the definitions of the words in this dictionary are funny and more than what it appears to be at first glance.

In Look What I Found on the Farm, readers learn all about farms, including the animals that live there to the plants that can be found. The book includes little interactive parts where readers search for pictures on the pages, and also includes a lot of information about the farm. It would be a great introduction to a farm for very young children to school-aged children as different age groups can interact with it in different ways.
