Praisesong for the Widow by Paule Marshall
4.0
Was recommended this book by a friend and then again by bell hooks in her book “Sister of The Yams: Black women and self-recovery” (a must-read), she mentions this book often. This was a lovely story about overcoming grief, rediscovery of self, the interconnectedness of the Black diaspora and healing.
The Salt Eaters by Toni Cade Bambara
2.0
This is such a challenging read and not due to the lexicon — the formatting is all over the place and it’s hard to follow what’s going on. One characters stream of consciousness flows into flashbacks of another character. There’s no clear distinction between who we’re talking about. Too much bouncing around and so unfortunately, I had to give up on this one.
Go Ahead in the Rain: Notes to a Tribe Called Quest by Hanif Abdurraqib
5.0
This book is INCREDIBLE. I legit teared up reading the last page. @NifMuhammad interweaves the constantly changing landscape of rap, the legend of ATCQ and the sociopolitical climate of their trajectory perfectly. A must read for music lovers, producers and rappers.
Dust Tracks on a Road by Zora Neale Hurston
4.0
I really enjoyed getting to know Zora in this book. She was an extremely imaginative and idealistic person which is reflected in some of her racial politics which would be considered questionable today but overall, it was an enjoyable read -- the foreword by Maya Angelou and afterward by Henry Louis Gates Jr. were great as well!
Another Brooklyn by Jacqueline Woodson
3.0
Wow. This book was reminiscent of The House On Mango Street, Sula and Crooklyn. Woodson’s approach to writing is lyrical and minimalist— she says so much with few words. This is a pretty quick read, only 171 pages. A brief story that didn’t leave me wanting more, it gave the reader just enough.
You Were Born for This: Astrology for Radical Self-Acceptance and Living Your Purpose by Chani Nicholas

I really enjoyed this and it definitely helped affirm what I knew to be my purpose. I wish I got my clarity on Chiron, Mid Heavens and other planetary things but overall a good read
