Read it in two sittings. Very lighthearted, fun, and easy. A good way to get out of a bit of a slump after finishing Gideon (which was brain altering)

“In case you haven’t noticed, I’m weird. I’m a weirdo. I don’t fit in. I don’t want to fit in.”
I really honestly just wanted this to be over the entire time. For a book about women, all of the women felt entirely one dimensional. And at no point do they become more complex. In fact, they become less complex with each appearance. If this was the intention, it just made me less interested in the characters. I don’t hate them, I don’t love them, I have no feelings regarding their potential endangerment.
Part three was the most compelling part of the book, if not because it kind of pokes around into the complexity of a deeply intimate but non sexual female relationship and whether or not the main character actually did want more from that. That part alone could’ve been the whole book.
This book honestly wanted to be an Ottessa Moshfegh book but like was maybe trying a bit too hard to get there.

As part of the series, this felt a bit disjointed from the others. As a book, I really enjoyed the use of a childlike perspective. It would be so nice to say what you feel plainly and tell people you love them when you feel it. I appreciated that interpretation. Maybe the book that was the most forthcoming with information, believe it or not.

I actually liked this more than Gideon? I definitely read it a lot faster and it had my attention a lot sooner. I also feel like the complexity was very well crafted in this one.
Edit: After reading a truly horrid book after this series, I am bumping this to 5

What did I even just read. First half slow, second half INSANITY. I couldn’t go one chapter without my jaw unhinging. Index chapters are v
Good. Felt like I had earned those nuggets of insight after all that. Also! Naming was very funny

The writing in this was fantastic. Author is perceptive and honest about himself and others. His love of waves comes across so clearly and cleanly. A writing style to aspire to.
The end chapter was very poignant and melancholic. I didn’t think I would be that sad to see a return to Tavarua. Also, stark ending. And no acknowledgements was kind of insane to me, especially since he wrote about so many people so personally. The literal physical last page of the book being the last page of the memoir was surprisingly emotional. You turn that last page and you’re staring at the back cover. Maybe an experience I will never have with another book.
