The premise was very promising, and I was quite hooked on the story despite it not being as funny as it was said to be. Yes, it was funny at times, but oftentimes the 'humour' relied on (internalized) misogyny and/or fatphobia and/or belittling mental health issues and eating disorders — this is also why I found the book's feminist takes to be quite hypocritical. I hated Grace as a character, she was so insufferable, annoying, petty and too bitter over the smallest of things, but I stuck up with her because — well — you can't quite love a serial killer anyways. I liked the ending, it was justified and fit perfectly with my dislike on Grace, though I also must say that such a plot twist should have been foreshadowed better. A murder mystery is no fun if it doesn't make you feel dumb for not realising the answer earlier; it shouldn't come so out of the blue (as in this case) that it feels literally impossible.

My second time reading this book, and it was a better experience because this time I didn't try to rush through it. Woolf's writing gives you so much to think, and I don't think you're even supposed to understand every single thing — nonetheless, Orlando was a nice ride through time. Woolf's way of writing feminist commentary is witty and original, though her feminism is very white (like everything else in her time). There were also some colonial and even poc-fetishizing scenes in this book, which weren't really necessary to the plot and due to them and the rather confusing plot I can't rate this book higher (it still wasn't bad, just not the best either).

The back cover was promising, and so were the first 100 pages, but there were too many characters with too little backstories that weren't explained and so I wasn't able to wholly grasp what exactly happened in this book.
Also there were so many, too many references to Finland and Finnish people :/ As a Finnish person, I usually find the mentions of our country to be a pleasant surprise, but there were Finnish things and boring stereotypes on like every other page of the book..

Finally a contemporary romance novel that actually had me rooting for the main couple, dying even... I feel like my identity as a romance-hater is being threatened, but perhaps not in a bad way? There definitely were so many cliché tropes in this book, some of which melted me *cough* the moonlight swimming scene *cough* and some others that were predictable and boring. Also both of the sisters were really insufferable at times, I didn't really like all their interactions very much, but I also have to praise the "mandatory" third act conflict
for it not having been between Charlie and Nora — first of all I'm glad they didn't have serious drama and secondly, the conflict made me like the sisters more. It was also a necessary element for character growth and overall gave more depth to the story.

I'm still doubtful of whether a romance book worthy of MY five stars even exists, and while this one was not perfect either, it was still so very enjoyable that I binge-read like 75% of it in one sitting. No regrets <3

Vaikea antaa tälle tähtiä, kun kyseessä on tietokirja, jonka sisältö on vanhentunutta. Osa tästä on joskus pitänyt paikkansa, osa taas ei koskaan; esimerkiksi luonnontiedeosio pitää monien yksityiskohtiensa puolesta edelleen paikkansa, kunhan ei huomioida sitä, että kaiken väitetään lopulta olevan ylhäältä Jumalan tahdosta luotua. Teosta oli mielenkiintoista lukea, sillä se antaa hyvän vertauskohdan yhteiskuntamme kehitykselle sekä toimii mainiona aikamatkana 1800-luvun lopun Suomeen — tällaista opetettiin kouluissa 150 vuotta sitten. Opin itsekin uusia asioita Suomen historiasta! Minun saamani historian opetus kun on painottunut 1800-1900-luvuille, aikaan, jota tähän aikaan vasta elettiin tai pidettiin kaukaisena tulevaisuutena. Teoksella tosin on kreationistisen ja kristillisen asenteensa lisäksi myös aika kansallismielinen näkökulma Suomeen, suomalaisuuteen sekä suomensukuisiin kansoihin, mikä ilmenee mm. virheellisinä ja haitallisina stereotypioina eri kansoista, kuten karjalaisista tai saamelaisista. Ja vaikka kehuin luonnontiedeosiota, oli sielläkin yksi aika hauska "fakta" — maailmamme neljä alkuainetta sanotaan olevan tuli, vesi, maa ja ilma. (vielä kun historiaosiossa olisi lukenut, että tulikansa hyökkäsi... :D)

Luin näistä vain Asmodeus ja kolmetoista sielua, joka yllätti nerokkuudellaan — se oli hauska, synkkä ja niin modernin kuuloinen, että on vaikea uskoa sen olevan vuodelta 1915. En tiennyt teoksesta mitään ennen sen lukemista, mutta Asmodeus — Manalan piru huijaamassa helsinkiläisiä myymään sielunsa hänelle — kumosi odotukseni täysin, ja toisaalta myös ylitti ne.

Lyhyt kirja, mutta tiivistää hyvin suomalaisen elämän ja ihmisten välisen kanssakäymisen pääpiirteineen: hiljaisuus, puhumattomuus vaivaantuneisuus, kiusaantuneisuus, tunneilmaisun vaikeus sekä tietysti myös alkoholinkäyttö. Pidin paljon Vartion kirjoitustyylistä, Anni hahmona oli aika mitäänsanomaton mutta jotenkin myös ymmärrettävä, Napoleon taas herätti minussa vastenmielisyyttä jo ensiesiintymisessään.
Annin kuolema todella tuli yllätyksenä minulle lukijana vähintään yhtä paljon kuin tarinan hahmoillekin, sydänkohtaus kuin salama kirkkaalta taivaalta — vai oliko sydänkohtaus, tekikö Napoleon jotain kun vältteli lääkärin kutsumista? Tää jäi vaivaamaan... Olisin halunnut Annin pysyvän elossa, olisin halunnut lukea hänestä lisää :(

Mielenkiintoinen, romaanimainen kirjoitustyyli; kirjoittaessaan Kivestä Keskisarja omaksuu tämän kekseliäät sanavalinnat, mutta liika omaperäisyys osoittautuu negatiiviseksi, kun Keskisarja soveltaa nykyajan käsitteitä 1800-luvun yhteiskuntaan liiankin luovin perustein — tai perusteetta. En oikein pitänyt teoksen kerronnasta, sillä vaikka teos tietokirjana erottuukin edukseen kielellisten ansioidensa takia, Keskisarjan asenne on liiankin lähellä Kiven Seitsemän veljeksen "pojat on poikia"-asennetta. On käsittämätöntä, että olevinaan faktoihin perustuva teksti käyttää  "käsitteitä" kuten "me too -kimitys" — ensinnäkin aivan hirveää seksuaalisen ahdistelun uhrien ja naisten kokemusten vähättelyä, ja toisekseen luulisi historioitsijan tietävän, että 2000-luvun vallitsevia arvoja ja niihin pohjautuvia ilmiöitä ei voi sellaisenaan soveltaa 1800-luvun yhteiskuntaan.
