A classic Poirot mystery. The ending was totally unpredictable as usual, never in my small brain did I even consider that an option!! I wish the book had had more christmassy vibes, but it was a nice read nonetheless.

not much happened in the first half of the book and I was quite ready to dnf it, but luckily the plot improved greatly in the second half and now I'm excited to read the sequel!! YA fantasy definitely is not a genre I typically enjoy, but it's nice to have some variety in my reads sometimes :)

I really loved the first part, and had the rest of the book been like it, I'd probably have given this at least 4.5 stars. Still not bad, all the nature stuff was mind-blowingly incredible, but some of the (POC) characters were pretty stereotypical and I didn't really like how all their stories intertwined in the second half.

The writing was excellent; very compelling and beautiful, though it also felt pretentious at times and kept the characters at a distance. Going into the book I expected to like it a lot more than I actually ended up doing, as the premise sounded very interesting but the book ended up being very little about 'the promise' that even its name suggests. Social justice and diverse perspectives were what I expected, but instead I got rather boring relationships and white guilt and no actual action for anything. I really wanted to immerse myself in the story, and even though the sentences were beautiful, they did not manage to evoke anything in me and it was hard to concentrate on something that felt like it was purposefully keeping me away. The writing surely deserves the Booker price, but the story itself fell quite flat.

valloittava matka ajan halki, en ole koskaan kokenut vastaavaa. Välillä turhankin pitkästyttävä ja sama teema alkoi tuntua toistolta, mutta sitten taas jokainen käänne oli olennainen osa tarinaa eikä niitä poiskaan voisi ottaa. En ymmärrä miten Saisio on saanut ajatuksen tämän kaiken luomisesta, VAU. Kerronta ja huumori on kerrassaan ainutlaatuista, ja hahmot vaikuttavat niin eläviltä että heitä voisi koskettaa. Se harmittaa, että joihinkin hahmoihin kiinnyin todella paljon, mutta tarinan täytyi siirtyä aivan muualle ja unohtaa heidät :( Tätä voisi oikeastaan kuvailla kaikilla Storygraphin valittavissa olevilla adjektiiveilla, ja ne pitäisivät silti paikkansa.

Sisältövarotuksia en nyt laita kun en muista läheskään kaikkea, mutta kaikenlainen ihmiselämään kuuluva murhista uskonnollisuuteen.
