I definite step up from the first book. Thi book went in directions I could have never imagined it going. The plot twist at the end was amazing and seemingly shocking and heartfelt.
At times the Dialogue was clunky and the characters did stuff that definitely made you want to slap the book shut. Especially Bree who continuously makes bad decisions without thinking about the affect it has on others. It was a good read. Beware there is a love triangle, which frustrates me very much but the chemistry between all the characters is well written.

Although I did find the ending slightly realistic. I still loved this book and this duology immediately heads to the top of my list as my favorite Marie Lu series. What is described to be a thousand-year-old empire is destroyed simply by killing its ruler. There are no people who continue to stand for Karesan beliefs and the transition to separate countries is seamless and unrealistic simply.
