Champagne and Lemon Drops by Jean Oram
3.0
Completely, category-wise out of my comfort zone. Yet, it still managed to suck me in right away and now I must have the next in the series. Well done, Ms. Oram. Usually words like "chick lit" and "romance" send me running in the other direction but I am partial to small-town life. Surprisingly, this book drew me in before getting to the small-town introductions. Recommend. Good, quick read.
No Human Involved by Barbara Seranella

I just couldn't handle this book. I cannot think of any other time that I didn't see a book through, even if I did fail to get into it but this one - I just couldn't go on... it just never picked up, grasped me and was highly predictable -what I did manage to read of it. The description sounded incredibly griping but - it doesn't seem to totally fit - unless of course it takes more than 53% of the book to get to the point where it does fit the synopsis.
I'd give the author another chance for sure and feel bad to write a poor review but the authors I do know say to always write honest reviews either way so there it is.

Lucky by Alice Sebold

Whether you're a victim of any sort of attack or not, you should read this book. Alice Sebold's account is so incredibly honest; she does not she away from sharing any details. It is a tough read for sure, knowing it's non-fiction but without spoiling anything I would like to point out that it does give hope. See it through.
I heard from a graduate of the same college at which this crime occurred that it was particularly tough for her to read as she's walked the very same routes as Alice did when she was victimized. This very real, very honest tale of her struggles lend really important insight to both primary and secondary victims and honestly - humans in general. I couldn't put it down from the moment I picked it up and I was left altered a bit upon completion. Very powerful book. Highly recommend to everyone.
I feel like those convicted of similar crimes should be forced to read this ... anyone with any smidgeon of humanity in them will perhaps regret what they've done -if they are capable of such an emotion.... this if of course on a different note and I digress...

Dying to Forget by Trish Marie Dawson

Couldn't put down ... then immediately had to purchase #2 in this series and boy was I relieved to see that #3 just dropped as well as someone who is DYING for the third installment of Dawson's Find Me Series.
The book starts off on a predictable note but turns unpredictable within just a few pages. Piper Willow is special; that much we can tell right away but I'm still into book 2 and haven't found out exactly how/ what makes her special. Not only is this an impossible-to-put-down page turner but, this can completely help those who have lost people to suicide. Trish describes a completely plausible and detailed explanation of where they go and what they are doing - and it's damn good, like they took themselves from us because others need them more.... without giving anything away - I guess that's all I'll say here. Other than: read it. I personally promise you'll love it, 'young adult' or not.

Rum and Raindrops by Jean Oram

Hi there - I anxiously waited for this installment of the Blueberry Springs series as I was a big fan of the prior two! While I'm generally not a fan of 'chick lit' or 'romance' I was promptly sucked into this series with the first installment as I am often drawn to small town life-settings. While Oram is consistent and maintains great continuity from one installment to the next, and the book did hold my attention, it was highly predictable as it was much like its predecessors. Probably I'll continue reading from this author as I do get into them and keep turning the pages, done before I know it. Anything that can at least do that is a great distraction from real life or a great way to spend time. I am honestly not sure if I liked it less than the other two in the series or if it simply was more predictable because I've come to like this author and subsequently know what to expect from her.
I do hope she surprises me and I will keep reading - thus giving her the chance to. I do not mean to be harsh, only honest so I would like to say that I find nearly everything I read predictable - it is an infuriating thing about me that is not the fault of every writer, hollywood director, etc. in existence!
Personally I did take note of some of her choice of wording, particularly in the 'girl talk' parts; perhaps in her circles they do talk like this - with a bit of reserve despite trying to sound dirty? I'd have been more blunt myself, but that is not always a desirable characteristic! Guess I'm just sharing what little bit I would change if given the chance.
Ms. Oram produced another solid read, maintaining continuity which not enough people bother with, while helping us to get to know another character better in the small town of Blueberry Springs. I do hope to see more in this series.

Ms. Oram did it again: sucked me into the Blueberry Springs affairs. I'm not a fan of Romance reading at all but the thing about this series is there is so much else going on and the Romance can (for me) be viewed as underlying... I can easily over look this with all else that's going on - she does a fabulous job of keeping the books steamy while giving them an actual plot. I cannot wait for the next installment in the Blueberry Springs world... I highly rec this AFTER reading Lemondrops & Champagne.
Orange Is the New Black: My Year In a Women's Prison by Piper Kerman
3.0
First of all, if you come to this book thinking it's anything like the amazing Netflix series - stop. It's a good read but an entirely different animal. As this reads, Piper had it fairly good as far as being deprived of freedom & basic human rights goes of course, being white, upper class, etc. However please don't miss the bigger picture. That she and her prison-mates are in large part NOT a danger to society and are locked away for doing things that should be decriminalized. Meanwhile harder criminals get released due to "over-crowding".
Piper does alright, making it in with the 'popular' crowd & keeping her nose clean, so to speak. Reading about her experience was interesting enough to keep the pages turning.
Reading between the lines, I feel like some of the drama that was made up for the Netflix Series might be more true-to-life in prison life, especially the funding part, as politicians are involved.
Overall interesting from many perspectives and I do recommend.

Dying to Remember by Trish Marie Dawson

Annoyingly, yet brilliantly typical of Trish, this book leaves us hanging - badly. When I finished this, I had to jump right on amazon and buy the next installment. That means I not only couldn't put it down but couldn't stop even when the book stopped.
I'm painfully waiting for the third installment of her Find Me series as I write this, I know other fans of TMD are with me here.
Without spoiling anything, this book is an amazing read. A great continuance of Dying to Forget, #1 in the Station Series - it elaborates on what happens to suicide victims and opened my mind ( and hopefully yours too) to other worlds and realms. This book kept me intrigued while causing me to think which is a wonderful gift Trish has.
READ THIS SERIES - you will not be sorry. You might find yourself thinking about all kinds of things you previously thought impossible, OR even - helped. If you've lost someone or been suicidal yourself, you've got all the more reason to read this series.
While it is fiction -it is mind-opening.

The perfect way to wrap up this hold-onto-your-seats, impossible-to-stop-thinking-about, series. Without spoiling for any kids who haven't gotten this far yet, I will say I am pleased overall with the survivors, and as the series was very well done, sad for the losses but they were done, in the book (not so much in the movies) with grace and care and the respect they deserve.
The entire point of the series comes out in the final pages of this last installment - it was left out of the movie so if you're a fan DO read the books. I will not post spoilers here, as I said but it is important.
Ms. Rowling's imagination and creativity here are heroic and often - yes, I'll say it - true to life. Thank you, Jo for the insight and for helping me to open my mind. Your books mean so much to my family. The movies do make for great watching when we can calm ourselves down about the cuts and changes - like any book-to-movie needs in order to fit onto film.
Read the entire series, in order - you'll never be disappointed. In fact, you won't be able to put it down. & if you keep an open mind, you might even learn some valuable things...

A perfect, page-turning, impossible-to-put-down introduction to the wonderful HP series. The kids are young, yes but don't let that scare you away grown ups - they grow up before your eyes, fast and it is worth the read. This first installment in this legendary series is (sorry to be redundant but perfect just fits) a PERFECT introduction to Harry & his friends, as well as the Wizarding World, some of the professors at Hogwarts and other important characters as well as Lord Voldemort and what will go on to be the great rivalry between himself and the title character.
When you decide your kids are almost old enough for this series, ease them in with this and the next two installments- nothing scary yet, no deaths - just the intriguing world of magic, Harry & his friends. When they are mature enough for the rest, they'll be ready. These books can, unlike most books for me, be read over and over again - they never get old, nor do them movies though they leave much out.
READ THEM. You won't regret it. Pass them down to your kids, nieces, nephews, etc - everyone deserves to be introduced to this amazing world.
