Not Another Love Song by Julie Soto

4.5

So far I’ve loved everything written by Julie Soto.

“Give this a chance. The two of us. I’m not good with words…I’m good with notes on page”.

📚 rivals to lovers
📚 mutual pining
📚 slow burn
📚 professional musicians

Fell in love with the characters in the symphony of love. Particularly enjoyed the machinations of the symphony. If only we could hear the beautiful music being played on the pages.

“If he admitted that entire symphonies had unfurled in his mind when they played together…”

Although this was predominantly single PoV (FMC), there were some insights into Alex’s PoV dispersed throughout the story (wished we got more or a full dual PoV).

“But being utterly hypnotized by a nobody, playing “Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring” of all things, was unsettling”

Some small cameos from Forget Me Not which was a nice little surprise. And that scene with the cello, oh my (see the cover illustrated by Nikita Jobson). There is a part where I wish he fought a little harder, but still happy with the HEA.

“There is something exciting about sight-reading. Don’t you agree”?

For lovers of Ali Hazelwood, music and love.

“Please make music with me. I need you in my life”

“It’s simple, really. It’s about a cello who fell in love with a violin”

This is my second dive into the Ghosted series, and its such a beautiful written and though evoking series. I intend to go back and read the first book in the series.

“If you ever need me, if you ever find yourself awake at night wanting me, I’ll be here. I’ll be here loving you”

I was a little skeptical at first, as I hardly come across stories that are able to tie together a dream world/ fake family with reality. But this story was able to come to a highly satisfying ending, that didn’t diminish the character growth.

“McCormick can’t leave me - he isn’t real”

An additional bonus were the  quirks of the story being set in Geneva. Also, I feel like this could be counted as a Christmas story as the story is bookended by the festive season.

”In dreaming we do all the magical, wondrous things we are afraid to do in waking life”

Thank you Netgalley, the publisher & author for this arc in exchange for this honest review.

Reminiscent of Hunger Games.

They chose me. Or in other words, they chose me to die”

📚 love triangle
📚 fantasy
📚 romance
📚 slow burn
📚 dual POV

Interesting magic system and twist on the whole ‘chosen one’ with all the powers.

“Perhaps she will not need powers, to be Powerfull”

That was one of the longest slow burns I’ve read in some time. And although the love triangle adds another layer to the story, I could have done without it.

“I‘ll save your again and again, aimlessly hoping you will allow  me to stay in it”

Did like the dynamic and banter between Paeyton & Kai. And their scenes together were my fav in the book.

“He doesn’t even know who I truly am. What I truly am. And if he did, he would kill me”

Liked the characterisation of Kai and how he battles with his duty as the future Enforcer.

“Destruction is my duty and the king has made me numb to killing…Even monsters can have morals”

The ending has left me with just as many questions as answers…

“Stay.”

🚫 close door romance

“I didn’t want to kiss you. For research.

This felt faced paced and had me hooked early on.

“Charlie might be a normal persons eight - but he was a writers ten, for sure”.

Soent a lot of time questions Charlie. He’d do something nice and then his next move would be a full 180. Not surprised Emma was unsure about their dynamic.

“As a favour. She has no job, no money, and absolutely nothing going for her”

At times this felt more like contemporary literature than a romance.

“The two leads will wind up together. That’s what the audience showed up for…if you don’t give it to them, it’s beyond unsatisfying - it’s a violation of trust”

Still one I enjoyed it, especially their excursions to undertake research for their romcom (see line dancing).

“No six-foot cowboys for you”

Plenty of swoony  and quotable moments too.

“I googled how long it takes to fall in love…eighty eight days. And we’ve only know each of for thirty-one”

Found the dynamic with her family and the guilt she holds with that an interesting side plot in the story.

Something comforting about this series.

“There’s a look of such anger and agony on his face. He doesn’t want this either. I don’t either. I’m devastated. This is my worst nightmare”.

The benefits of dual PoV is getting to see behind the mask of Haeden. He’s had a tough and traumatic past with love and it’s sweet to see them slowly come to terms with their feelings for each other.

“I do not know what I do if I resonate to another female only to her die. It will destroy me”

Another key thing for me is the communication ends up be strong in this one (no miscommunication tried here).

Plan to continually go back to this planet full of humans and blue aliens!

This was a sweet slice of life romance that showed the start of two people who secretly had been pinning after the other.

Unfortunately, it did feel a bit like Insta love (sometimes difficult to avoid in a novella). But maybe even more so in this case.

“He was in so deep with her. The though should’ve scared him, especially since everything between them was still brand new”

It was a nice little pallet cleanser and has me intrigued about the other books in the series.
