The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan

Now I am not sure why but I have never read the Percy Jackson series. Unless you count the one time I read a single page in the second grade. It didn't draw to me, I was definitely a Harry Potter kid. But after reading again a decade later, I don't know how it took me so long! This is a classic I think I'll come back to for the rest of my life whenever I need a pick-me-up or just bored and need an escape, as I do with my beloved Harry Potter books.

After the first Percy Jackson book, I have to say I was disappointed. It was my least favorite of the series and it gave me a bit of readers drought while reading. I am happy to say I perservered and thank goodness for that; the ending makes up for the less enjoyable plot. It's another one of those shocking ends that leaves you staring and wanting more. It's definitely much better after you read the rest of the series and has rereadability in that regards. I just don't think I'd ever read this as a stand alone.

I am glad I didn't watch the movie first, though maybe I wouldn't have chose this book to read at work. God, it is sexual . A little here or there was expected but no it was a good portion. It didn't make it less enjoyable, more surprising than anything. Although, I do think the hype surrounding it was at its detriment. The writing style wasn't exactly my favorite. It seemed to drag a bit in some areas. And again, for the hype around it, I was expecting to enjoy it more. What ultimately saved the book for me was the last chapter. As I sit here mourning my relationship, the last chapter sat with me. It healed small bits of my heart. It was everything I needed in this moment.
