Rand having just taken the stone of Tear leaves for the Aiel Waste to enter Rhuidean and declares himself as He Who Comes With The Dawn. Perrin after hearing rumors of trouble in Two Rivers, chooses to return home with Faile. The two defend against Trollocs that have been brought to destroy them. Elayne and Nynaeve go to Tarabon to hunt the Black Ajah and end up facing one of the Forsaken. Min arrives in Tar Valon to report to the Amyrlin Siuan Sanche, inadvertently setting off a chain of events that will lead to a Tower split.

Rebel Shaido Aiel begin sacking and looting Cairhien. Rand peruses them and defeats them. Mat trying to escape the pull of Rand tries to leave before the battle but steps in to save part of the army and becomes the leader of the Band of the Red Hand. Lanfear, learning of the growing attraction between Rand and Aviendha, is furious with jealousy and attempts to kill them. Moiraine stops her, sacrificing herself in the process. Meanwhile, Nynaeve and Elayne travel through hostile territory, attempting to find the base of the rebel Aes Sedai in Salidar; after they arrive, Nynaeve is able to trap the Forsaken Moghedien who has been hunting them.

Rand founds the Black Tower and rules Cairhien and Caemlyn. Emissaries from the White Tower and Rebels approach him. Eventually he is captured by Aes Sedai loyal to Elaida, then freed by Aiel, Asha'man, led by Perrin Aybara. The rebel Aes Sedai of Salidar appoint Egwene as their new Amyrlin, and she has their forces set off for Tar Valon. She also raises Nynaeve and Elayne to Aes Sedai and sends them to Ebou Dar to hunt for the Bowl of the Winds.

Rand accompanied by Asha'man, attacks Illian and defeats Sammael in a duel in Shadar Logoth. Egwene finds Lan and sends him to help Nynaeve in Ebou Dar. Elayne, Nynaeve, and Mat search for the Bowl of the Winds, to break the unnatural heat brought on by the Dark One. They are accompained by Aviendha, Thom, Juilin, and Birgitte. They find it and enlist the help of the Kin and Sea Folk.

The Bowl of the Winds is used to reverse the unnatural heat. Elayne claims the Lion Throne. Perrin moves into Ghealdan in an attempt to stop Masema, the self-proclaimed Prophet of the Dragon. Faile Bashere is kidnapped by the Shaido. Egwene al'Vere, Amyrlin Seat of the rebel Aes Sedai, finally manipulates her unruly followers into giving her more control, and they prepare Travel to Tar Valon to lay siege. Rand attempts to repel the Seanchan invasion in Altara. In the end, the Seanchan army and Rand's forces fight to a stalemate when Rand uses Callandor on the Seanchan army. By wielding Callandor alone, the sword makes him temporarily insane, causing much destruction on both armies. Returning to Cairhien, Rand is attacked by traitorous Asha'man, led by Dashiva, who attempt and fail to kill him.

Perrin and his followers pursue the Shaido who kidnapped Faile. Elayne attempts to solidify her grip on the Lion Throne and put down rebellious nobles. Mat is trapped in the city of Ebou Dar, which is under Seanchan occupation. He plans his escape, but in the end, his plans are disrupted by the interference of a Seanchan noblewoman named Tuon, who is revealed as the Daughter of the Nine Moons. Mat, having heard a prophecy about him marrying the Daughter of the Nine Moons, kidnaps Tuon instead of tying her up and leaving her behind. Rand is bonded as a Warder by Elayne, Aviendha, and Min. He hunts down Asha'man traitors in Far Madding. Rand and Nynaeve Travel to Shadar Logoth. There, defended by Cadsuane and loyal Asha'man against the Forsaken, Rand and Nynaeve link and use the Choedan Kal to cleanse saidin of the taint of the Dark One.

Mat continues trying to escape Seanchan controlled territory while courting Tuon, the Daughter of the Nine Moons, the woman whom he has kidnapped and who, it has been prophesied, will become his wife.
Rand, rests after the ordeal of cleansing the One Power. He sends Bashere, Logain , and Loial to negotiate a truce with the Seanchan. They return to tell him that the Seanchan have accepted the truce, but demand the presence of the Dragon Reborn. Egwene leads the rebel Aes Sedai in maintaining the siege of Tar Valon she is kidnapped by agents of the White Tower.

Elayne gains the throne of Andor and also manages to root out the Black Ajah sisters in Caemlyn. Egwene, captured by the Tower Aes Sedai and reduced to novice white, begins undermining Elaida's control of the White Tower from within. Rand escapes a trap by the Forsaken Semirhage while at the same time capturing her and losing his left hand. Mat and Tuon get married after their party reaches the edge of Seanchan controlled territory. Tuon then returns to Ebou Dar where she learns about a civil war in the Seanchan empire and the deaths of the Imperial family except her, which will make her the new Empress of Seanchan. Perrin defeats the Shaido in Malden with the help of the Seanchan and rescues his wife Faile. Unusual Trolloc attacks, the dead walking, ripples in the fabric of the world and other events indicate that the Last Battle is drawing near;

The Last Battle has started. The seals on the Dark One's prison are crumbling. The Pattern itself is unravelling, and the armies of the Shadow have begun to boil out of the Blight. Perrin Aybara is hunted by spectres from his past. To prevail, he must find a way to master the wolf within him or lose himself to it forever. Meanwhile, Matrim Cauthon prepares for the most difficult challenge of his life. The Tower of Ghenjei awaits, and its secrets will reveal the fate of a friend long lost. The end draws near. It's time to roll the dice.

There are no endings, and never will be endings, to the turning of the Wheel of Time. But it was an ending.
