Perrin after hearing rumors of trouble in Two Rivers, chooses to return home with Faile. The two defend against Trollocs that have been brought to destroy them. Elayne and Nynaeve go to Tarabon to hunt the Black Ajah and end up facing one of the Forsaken. Min arrives in Tar Valon to report to the Amyrlin Siuan Sanche, inadvertently setting off a chain of events that will lead to a Tower split.

Rebel Shaido Aiel begin sacking and looting Cairhien. Rand peruses them and defeats them. Mat trying to escape the pull of Rand tries to leave before the battle but steps in to save part of the army and becomes the leader of the Band of the Red Hand. Lanfear, learning of the growing attraction between Rand and Aviendha, is furious with jealousy and attempts to kill them. Moiraine stops her, sacrificing herself in the process. Meanwhile, Nynaeve and Elayne travel through hostile territory, attempting to find the base of the rebel Aes Sedai in Salidar; after they arrive, Nynaeve is able to trap the Forsaken Moghedien who has been hunting them.

Rand attempts to repel the Seanchan invasion in Altara. In the end, the Seanchan army and Rand's forces fight to a stalemate when Rand uses Callandor on the Seanchan army. By wielding Callandor alone, the sword makes him temporarily insane, causing much destruction on both armies. Returning to Cairhien, Rand is attacked by traitorous Asha'man, led by Dashiva, who attempt and fail to kill him.

Mat, having heard a prophecy about him marrying the Daughter of the Nine Moons, kidnaps Tuon instead of tying her up and leaving her behind. Rand is bonded as a Warder by Elayne, Aviendha, and Min. He hunts down Asha'man traitors in Far Madding. Rand and Nynaeve Travel to Shadar Logoth. There, defended by Cadsuane and loyal Asha'man against the Forsaken, Rand and Nynaeve link and use the Choedan Kal to cleanse saidin of the taint of the Dark One.

Mat and Tuon get married after their party reaches the edge of Seanchan controlled territory. Perrin defeats the Shaido in Malden with the help of the Seanchan and rescues his wife Faile.
