This is not a love story, it’s toxic as shit… HOWEVER it’s got great writing, intrigue, believable and flawed characters, and it’s sexy and romantic 🤭 I was hovering around three stars but the plot twist at the end sold it for me. Don’t expect to be giggling and kicking your feet, don’t expect to be happy at all especially with the characters decision-making but it makes sense nobody is stupid but they’re all stupid!

Close enough, welcome back gossip girl.

What do we have if not connection to others?

A simple, harrowing, hard, privileged, sad, empowering, beautiful story. Complicated and riveting. The challenge of being a kind and gentle woman without being taken advantage of is the heart of Britney’s story and keeps the more problematic/annoying portions of this memoir borderline irrelevant when compared to what she has overcome.

Such interesting characters and character dynamics set in a dark academia/magical setting. Never went where I thought it was going to go and put forth some fascinating questions about power and humanity. I got a little lost sometimes but I think that was my fault more than the book’s! Overall, a good read and I’d be interested to see where the next one takes the story.

I wish I read this in school so I could understand it more but what a poetic, tragic, beautiful story of post-slavery living told through a multi-generational magical, spiritual house and family.
