Sog. moderner dt. Klassiker. Einerseits ein wehleidiges, belangloses Geplapper voller Selbstmitleid über Probleme einer vergangenen Zeit. Andererseits doch so poetisch geschrieben, dass man es kaum aus der Hand legen kann und in einem Rutsch lesen will.

Beautiful language wrapping streams of consciousness, that are tough to appreciate by non-native English readers and the less linguistically-inclined. Endless reflections by fictional rich people on the little things of everyday life and human relationships in the interwar period - only that those are astutely boring. The novel satirises the bougie, pompous life of wealthy London, but I failed to discover a subversive element for myself.

Hailed as a great anti-imperialist milestone; I was surprised to still read an intensely colonial work. Fantastically lush, rich descriptions are contrasted with descriptions of the greatest atrocities. Tough to stomach, yet impressive. Demands critical reflection by the contemporary reader.
