proud of myself for managing to finish this book before i go on holiday 🤲 anyway this was as good as the priory of the orange tree, again the writing was dense but so detailed and the plot was impressively extensive. i really like how the author even made adjustments to the countries with places that existed at the time this book is set but no longer exist at the time the later book is set, that was a really nice touch. i don’t know if i mentioned this in my review for the priory of the orange tree but i like how the author develops each perspective character’s personality and that they’re all distinguishable and have a slightly different voice. i’m so sad that dumai died i thought she would somehow be saved by the dragons 😭 and now nikeya is alone :( however im happy for wulf and thrit i honestly didn’t expect them to get together but i also thought the way thrit was with wulf seemed a bit more than platonic, they are so cute together <3 also canthe being the haithwood witch was not something i saw coming but obviously made so much sense and she was a bit of a suspicious character from the start. i wish glorian and wulf had been able to spend more time as friends :,) i feel like the next book i read will feel so bland after this

i took an AGE to read this book because it’s quite dense and there’s a lot to digest but wow. i think this is the most thought out book i’ve ever read. the detail of each nation and its history and the whole story of cleolind and kalyba and neporo is insane idk how anyone comes up with shit like that. i love how different each region is and also ive never read a book that had multiple religions before and ones that were so in depth. as i said its dense and i think its just because so much information is given but you need it all to understand the story. i like the different perspectives, niclays was my least favourite and as a character i don’t really like him that much. i think my favourite to read from was either ead’s pov because of her and sabran (i love them) or tané because of nayimathun. oh and also loved aralaq, i like that there were animals and that some could talk. the vibe of this book was just spot on, super mysterious and sort of dark but then im glad there was a happy ending and that all the pov characters came together at one point. sad that kit died tho 😭 he was so sweet and funny i wish he’d been in it more

NOT THE PLOT TWIST omg i genuinely didn’t see that coming for kiva or for jaren 😭 wait bc looking back it makes sm sense abt kiva saving tilda and also when she told her the story and tilda asked to hear it when she woke up bc it was abt her 😭 bye that’s actually sad ok so next book im expecting a lot of tension since kiva and jaren are effectively enemies. obviously they’re gonna get married at the end at least i hope so. the addition of the coded messages was a nice touch and i also think this is a bit of a change from a lot of fantasy books which i like bc it’s all set in the prison, ofc it won’t be in the next book but still i liked that. it’s not the kind of book that i enjoyed on a soul level like throne of glass but it was good and easy to read
