I am ready to talk about Fourth Wing which has firmly landing in the“if I loved you less I could talk about it more” category. I have had a couple of days to gather my thoughts because this Fantasy broke my fantasy book slump and turned me absolutely feral for the next book in the series so I have quite a few thoughts.

First I will say this is my first Rebecca Yarros book, I had high hopes going into this book because of recommendations from my most trusted bookish besties. I went in completely blind, all I knew were “dragons and angst”  and if you’re willing to blindly trust me - stop reading here and go in knowing it’s a five star read with dragons and angst. Yarros pulls you so fiercely, you’re in the middle before you knew you began.

There is infinitely more to Fourth Wing if that is not enough to sell you. There is, in my opinion, the best chronic illness rep I have ever read in a fantasy novel, Violet has chronic pain, and a disability that never goes away. It is not magic’d away, she does not just work out enough and her disability “gets better” it is just a part of her everyday life and does not stop her from being a total badass.

People die, which is to say this is a fantasy book with actual stakes - they are not just playing war here, these students are actively training to become Dragon Riders at a war college in the middle of a 400 year was, it is incredibly cutthroat and intense.

The enemies to lovers are indeed enemies, not just mildly inconvenienced co-workers and their banter is to die for.

Fourth Wing is a fast paced fantasy with a deep lore that does not take 100 pages of confusion before you know what’s happening which to me, is a breath of fresh air.

My one “note” is that this book does feel a bit like YA (it is not YA and not being marketed as YA to be absolutely clear) so it could surprise you that there are explicit sex scenes about 75% in - so if that is not your scene this may not be the book for you.

THIS IS THE FIRST OF FIVE so take that into consideration when deciding if you want to join this journey. The first person who tells me this book is over-hyped will in fact be blocked - because what we are not going to do is shame people for liking a popular book. Fly on riders, and get your copy of Fourth Wing from your local bookseller.

dark and absolutely four chili peppers spicy, I loved this book based in revenge. Seeking vengence for her sister's death our FMC spends years of her life getting in the right place in the right time to exact her plan on the Fae Prince...she is caught and taken in this faeire retelling of beauty and the beast, I was ensnared by the dedication to killing the MMC - these are actual enemies folks, you know what they say keep your enemies close, and your iron blade closer.

a bride for the tithe, seems easy enough. a bride will be taken by the fae lord and out little threadwitch will get a good contract with a wealthy family in town. but what happens when the threadwitch is the one taken as the bride. while planning her escape, out little witch has to decide is leaving is the right option or if she'll fall for the bumbling charm of the fae-lord. I think Clare Sager does a great job developing these two characters in a short time while weaving in an intresting world.

Did not finish book. Stopped at 45%.
I was listening to the audio and it was just not engaging to me. I tried really hard but it wasn't there for me.

it feels unhinged to say this book is like movie popcorn. but it is, you start slowly, one bite at a time. when the movie begins we all try to be better than we are, we’re using napkins and blotting off the excess grease it’s all very tame - but as it ramps up you’re grabbing three to four pieces at a time, still no big deal. but then out of no where it’s as though you’ve never tasted popcorn before. Not only have you never had it, it’s the best thing in the world and you’re shoveling fistfuls in your mouth as though you’ll never eat substantive food again. You have cheap movie theater butter all over your face, hands, and somehow down your bra…that’s what magnolia parks is, at least for me.

it’s that, or it’s heroin.

the ending of this book - has shocked me to my core. I am not okay, unwell, generally doing bad. If you are having any kind of bad day put this book off for a few years I am so serious. Do not read this book until book five comes out. because I am going to just be wandering into the abyss for about a year - I want to scream, and throw a tantrum and sob into my emotional support person's chest. I want to curl up in a corner and rock back and forth, I am so unbelievably not okay. thoughts and prayers.
