The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger

First attempt // October 2013: I disliked it at first, then I started liking it, and now I dislike it again. Surprisingly I like the language, but I don't like the character. I'm 60 page in and I still can't see what the plot will be, if there is one, besides Holden being expelled from Pencey. I personally don't see why everyone says this book is genius, and that's coming from a teenager who should be able to relate to Holden completely. So I'm done. Maybe one day I'll try again, but not anytime in the near future.
Second attempt // August 2014: oh my god I can't do it. I got to chapter 20 and ughhhg noo I quit I'm done! I'll finish it one day but it won't be for a while
Third attempt // November 2014: oh my god I finally finished this. I hated every second of it, thank god it's done!

The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd

I'm not really sure how I feel about this book. Sometimes while reading I thought I liked it, but then other times I didn't. Half the time the writing style made me feel like I was reading bad fanfiction, while the other half had me almost tearing up over how beautifully written some scenes were.
I like almost all of the characters. I love Rosaleen's spirit, August's tenderness, how June came around in the end, Zach's passion. The Daughters of Mary are wonderful to read! June and Neil's interesting relationship made the story so much better, too!
The one character that I don't like is Lily. I find her to be rather selfish and immature. I know she's young but she bothers me. She does have moments where she's caring towards others, but at the end of the day it's all about her and how shitty her life has been and how unfair everything is (which is exactly how I was at 14 but that's besides the point LOL).
Overall, it's an ok read - the plot is alright, it's nicely paced, there are good lessons to be learned - but I don't think I'd read it again.
