I'm sorry - this is just too long.
I actually quite liked a fair few of the stories that make up this novel, but the stop ad go nature and the shear length of this book just does not work for me.

This book was beautifully creative. I really, really enjoyed it! Its fascinating to see how the author weaves the history of England together through all of his colorful and fantastic characters. Plus, what an epic adventure to experience England from prehistoric times, through Stonehenge, Roman occupancy, Saxon and Norman invasions, the Crusades, the continual ebb and flow of different religions, Medieval times with knights and lords, to the Tudors, multiple attempts and successes of revolutions, world wars, and so much more. If you're a fan of historical fiction, then you will LOVE this book. I am planning a trip to England to see all of the places mentioned...well, hopefully!

There are a few drawbacks. First, it's pretty long, 900 pages or so. However, its completely worth the commitment. There are also a few slow parts, which you have to push through. Those might have just been from my inability to connect with those specific characters though.

Overall, I highly recommend this book!! Read It!

I loved this book up until it becomes contemporary, where it became vastly less interesting. If you liked Pillars of the Earth, you should enjoy the first 2/3rds of this mammoth novel.

Sarum~ This is one of my all time favorite books. A long read yes,but so so worth it. You not only love the characters, but you also love it's families/enemies/ and friendships that come with every generation (from the iceage to current). I got all teary eyed after the last page because well, I had to say goodbye.

Very good book and quite facinating. However, once we reached more current age in the novel, it just wasn't as good anymore for me. I liked the speculation of the ancient history of the people in the book.

Good effort. Might have gone with three and a half, but not four. I liked the overall concept of a historical epic about England the prose was good, the pacing better than I expected, and the overall study in characters intermingling worked.

At times the book worked more like a grouping of novellas, with a common settling and theme, than one story. This detracted at times, but kept the book goingat other times. New York was better, and I'm hoping that London will be more focused.
