I loved the way this author used genetic-type body descriptions of specific families to link eras together and intertwined the families' history without making the families necessarily aware of the lineage. This is the way I like to share historical prospective with a human interest that makes the story easier to follow than a series of dates.

Follows a group of families through the history of the area round Salisbury from prehistoric times.

Reads like a selection of novellas at times. Prob won't reread this, but would read others of his books.

I’m throwing in the towel. I got a good halfway through and “got the good” from this book.

I really love Edward Rutherfurd's style. This book was a beast to get all the way through, but it's chock full of English history and I love how you follow the family lines throughout the centuries. Sometimes I found myself disappointed when chapters would end right as I'd gotten attached to the characters, though. Overall, very pleased with the novel.

Yawn. Dull. If you like cerebral history you will laugh, not in a good way, if you like good writing you will be bored.

Ok…. I’m proud I made it through over 200 pages of this in just a few days… but I can’t go on. Most of those 200 pages were deeeeep descriptions of prehistoric engineering. I’ve never read a novel that reads like a text book, so unique in that respect. My main takeaway, though: the f patriarchy of ancient times and beyond.

After 18 hours, I'm giving up. Life is too short! Maybe I'll pick up a physical copy in future and try finishing.
