Flood Tide by Clive Cussler

I'm a massive fan of Clive Cussler, but this one wasn't as good as the others. It was too much politics and not enough treasure hunting. As always the action sequences were incredible and I love the banter between Pitt and Giordino. The characters were brilliant with the exception of Julia Lee. She was supposed to be an INS agent, yet half the time, all she did was cook, swoon over Pitt and wear leather blue miniskirts! I know Cussler can represent women well, but in this book he didn't at all! Sorry for being all feminismy!
Overall, three stars. I'll chalk this up as one of the bad ones and move onto Spartan Gold which is sitting on my shelf.

Was it fun to read? Yes! Was it well written? No. Cussler is _so_ judgmental that I couldn't help but feel clubbed over the head by his opinions, and of course the bad guys are the complete embodiment of evil having no good characteristics at all. Additionally, these characters are supposed to be smart, but they are amazingly stupid when it fits the plot. Amazingly stupid. I didn't care much for the resolution with the bad guy either. Still, the plot was fun.

This was one of the more non-PC, stereotyped-beyond-belief books I've read. It was still a fast-paced, action-filled and enjoyable book but boy howdy was it cliched.

Not a bad book, but the plot was a little too complicated. I thought Cussler could have easily wrapped the book up a good hundred pages sooner, but like all of his books there was a lot of action, adventure, and Dirk Pitt's death-defying feats and narrow escapes. This time Pitt and his friend Al saved America from an evil Chinese gazillionaire who was involved in the illegal exportation of Chinese immigrants. A long book, but enjoyable. I give it a B-.

This is the second Dirk Pitt adventure I have read from Clive Cussler. The first, [b:Raise The Titanic!|41706|Raise The Titanic! (Dirk Pitt, #4)|Clive Cussler|http://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1309283097s/41706.jpg|81973], didn't impress me, but it intrigued me enough to pick up another offering from the author.

Well, after this, I doubt I'll pick up a third. Cussler's writing is downright bad, the plot of the story was so obvious I had it figured out hundreds of pages ahead of time, and the combination of invincibility, luck, wit, and charm of Dirk Pitt was laughable.

All in all it was just too much for me. The series of coincidences that took place, along with the number of deus ex machina moments made me grind my teeth. Reading this, I actually felt as if my intelligence were being insulted by Clive Cussler.

Dirk Pitt cannot stay out of trouble, it follows him everywhere, or he goes and finds it. While recovering from his last adventure he discovers a body dump on the bottom of a lake and also who is responsible. He sense of justice means he must bring them to account. This is just the opening move in how he goes to battle with one of the worlds riches men.

This is a roller coaster ride of an adventure that just seems to keep on going and going. Dirk and his pal Al come death on more than one occasion but they manage to scrape through to save the day. A classic Clive Cussler story and worth reading for the escapism.

Another interesting read from Clive Cussler, I can't remember what prompted me to pick one up but I've generally always enjoyed these books. They're adrenaline filled with science and history interspersed throughout to add an extra dimension of enjoyment. Not to mention a dachshund generally always features which is a cute nod that makes me think of my Raj.

In this story, our inimitable hero Dirk Pitt invariably forfeits his recuperative holiday when he becomes tangled in an elaborate immigrant smuggling ring whose mastermind is a Chinese billionaire Qin Shang whose connections run through the Washington political circuit, right up to Oval Office. As the plot unfolds, a more nefarious plan is revealed that has no care for potential mass loss of American lives.

The information overload always does overwhelm for a time so push through but this is definitely something that fans of Indiana Jones would enjoy.
