Finished this just in time! I really wanted to read Munro's latest collection of stories since her big Nobel win, and the CBC book club had voted on this for the month of December. It's another healthy dose of her storytelling, taking little snippets of the everyday and making it sound beautiful, a piece of literary art.
I particularly enjoyed Gravel, and the Finale stories at the end which were loosely based on her life I believe. This is the second book I have read by her, and perhaps there will be more in 2014! :)

I literally just cant stand short stories, specifically when they are devoid of prose and just sound like the warbling of a dull forty something year old woman
Also alice munro supporting her sex abuser husband who assaulted her daughter makes me unable to bother giving her a chance

Tā, jau uzreiz saku, ka man ar "augsto literatūru" lielākoties nav pa ceļam. Šie stāsti man neaizgāja.

Hmmm...

Tad jau visi iepriekšējie man patika daudz labāk. Divus pēdējos es vispār neatceros. Pusstundu pēc izlasīšanas.
Nu, ko lai saka. Gribēju baigi kultūru baudīt,bet sapratu, ka neko nesaprotu un laikam jālien atpakaļ alā.

Nelielas aizdomas, ka šeit varētu darboties tas pats faktors, kas cilvēkiem liek stāvēt pie krāsas klekša mākslas galerijā un gudri māt ar galvu.
Es tikmēr dodos atpakaļ lasīt fantastiku un pasarg' dies' vēl to fantāziju!

9 July 2024: well, shit. The cat’s out of the bag. For decades, Munro shielded and defended her husband, who sexually assaulted her daughter. It really re-frames a lot of her stories in an incredibly disturbing way.
I’ve always had lukewarm but appreciative feelings about her craft, but I must admit, I can’t help but see her differently now, especially considering that it is now evident that she drew on her experience shielding a rapist. Fuck.
