This one actually edged out better than the first book in my opinion, but in different ways. I can understand that the first book was a male power fantasy with a female survivor. What I enjoyed about this book was how the women stuck together and had a type of love for one another that triumphed over their fear. I also liked having more insight into the cannibal tribe and how The Woman grew them again.

I seriously think Ketchum is now one of my all-time favorites. Yes, this is twisted and gory and horrifying, but that’s what horror is for. Ketchum has an ability to create believable characters that I come to sympathize with, then he rips the carpet out from under me and leaves me empty. I don’t think I’ve had this strong of a reaction to any other writer. This is a strong R rating so don’t act surprised at some very heavy scenes, but this is the perfect example of horror at its best. Easy five stars.

I remember enjoying Off Season more—I liked how the end of this one was happier than Off Season though. I just got a bit bored during some parts where it felt like the action dwindled. Also there were SO MANY POV’s it got a bit annoying and confusing.

David’s death was so well written, I reread it three times. I like Jack Ketchum’s writing style a lot.

Okay, so maybe Ketchum’s writing doesn’t exist specifically to piss me off.
I get that this is a big departure from the first book and people are probably mad about that but the ongoing dread here? Fantastic. I found these characters much more compelling and major credit for anyone who can write a 9 year old boy convincingly.
