This was a wonderful tale. I realize that it's nearly an antique but seeing as it was set on a prehistoric island, it seems perfect.
I remember seeing covers of books, all joke and full of hyperbole. Yes, this is that book. Man running from a dreaded dinosaur while a woman faints with shock. The book, the tale was better than the cover. LOTS of narration, little dialogue.
I recommend!

An evolutionary fantasy with tons of adventure, mystery, and ultimately love. A fun read!

Nowhere near as good as the Mars books.
Too sexist and racist for 1918…
For a better adventure with better characters, Journey to the Center of the Earth is where it’s at. And published 50 years before this.

Another decent adventure novel from the master of the genre. This is a good, but not so original of an idea. ERB does put his own spin on it though. I liked the story, but he doesn't give it the attention he gives to the Martian or Tarzan novels. He doesn't dive in as much to the personalities of the characters or to the denizens of Caspak. Usually once they see a threat they immediately kill it and not much else is said. Each danger passes so quickly by shooting it with guns. Other than that it is an enjoyable and quick read.

This is the second time I've read this, although I had forgotten about my previous reading until they reached the lost world continent. So I'm already deducting points because it clearly didn't leave much of an impression on me the first time around.
The entire first half of the book was various mishaps and adventures at sea with German U Boats during WWI. It took up entirely too much of the story.
The evolutionary biologist in me is cringing at the jumbled mess of completely different eras represented on this island. Dinosours and Large Land Mammals, plus a variety of early hominids, all existing together with the earlier period flora and fauna occupying the southern part of the island, with the later period creatures more prevalent as you go north. I know Burroughs was trying to create a new form of evolution on this isolated continent, but it doesn't sit well with me.

Saw a review of this guy that was like, "he's definitely not an artist, writing isn't very good, plots are basic; but he was contemporarily extremely popular and all of his books are still in print 100 years later." This would be a good book to read out loud to a 10 year old boy, excluding the racist parts, of which there are 3 or 4 little bits about non-whites being farther up the evolutionary line, but it's a nice reminder that that was the common view among most of the smartest and dumbest people living through the early 20th century, and once I find a 10 year old boy I will tell him that -- therefore, I enjoyed it.

I enjoyed this book.
The story is interesting and fast passed, the scenarios are very cool and the descriptions are very realistic (we keep rooting for them to survive).
I will read the next two books in the trilogy because now I want to know what happens to these two.

It started out strong with a great premise, but then about halfway through the evolutionary biology gets wonky and the whole story starts to get a bit silly and even a tad racist. This guy obviously believed that white people are the most evolved race on the planet. I suppose I can't blame him: he published this story in 1918 and it's clearly a product of its time. Still, it's a fun and imaginative read that'll give you a glimpse of what the average American probably thought of the rest of the world at the turn of the 20th century.
