MC was a bit too Mary Sue-ish, but overall a good read to mark my 110th book, because I am an absolute sucker for clean, old timey stories. I won’t be reading the sequel though. Wonder what it is with Louisa May Alcott…

Eight Cousins is a sweet story and has always been one of my favorite's by Alcott.
Rose is far from perfect but she has a sweet spirit and kindness towards (almost) everyone. She unconsciously helps to bring her extended family closer together as she tries to influence her 7 boy cousin's for good.

Nearly forty years ago, I was in a hot car, on a long road to upstate New York for a vacation with my family. I had finished what I brought to read, was incredibly bored, and about to tease my sister into a state which would likely have led to my premature death at the hands of my parents, when I found a copy of Eight Cousins in the back seat. Out of sheer desperation, I began reading it, and found myself fascinated by this period piece by Louisa May Alcott. Later, I found and read the sequel Rose in Bloom, and found it equally satisfying and enjoyable. Recommended.

It’s not the book I so fondly remembered from childhood.

Cute, if slightly too sweet tale of a young girl, Rose, who goes to live with her uncle at "Aunt Hill" where she is surrounded by many aunts and seven boy cousins. The little adventures that the children get into were enjoyable enough and reading the book made for a pleasant afternoon. The relationship between the uncle and Rose was a bit odd by more modern standards which left me feeling a bit uncomfortable.

Oh, what fun it is to read Alcott's works for children...this one was charming as expected, didactic, of course, but regardless of that, such fun and joy to read...

Honestly, this book was quite enjoyable and I'm glad it was the first book of the year that I picked up! The book had some great underlying themes such as; society's expectations of what a women should wear and look like and how the uncle throws those ideas away and makes Rose feel comfortable in her skin. I also really liked how Rose helped her cousins better themselves and how she helped her Aunts feel more... "cheerful" in a sense. I loved how Rose grew into herself and how she starts to slowly realise that she will do anything to help out the people she loves and make them happy.

One of my childhood favorites, I found the way that Rose learns and grows inspiring. In some ways she and Uncle Alec challenged the norms of the time. As an adult, I see the theme of moral instruction, but I still attach a lot of sentimental value to the story.
Recently I read the free Kindle edition. It was interesting to note that some of the character names were different. For example, Annabel Bliss was Ariadne Blish.
