An enjoyable meander through Roman Chester (Deva) with a grumpy Medicus and his rebellious slave girl. Deals with serious themes with a light touch and focusses more on the colourful world surrounding our heroes than the business of murder, which suits the reluctant investigator. I am completely invested in these characters and will be picking up the next.

Decent mystery...a little obvious...but I'd read another from this series...

I liked this book in the end, but I felt that it took a really long time to get to where it was going. About halfway through, I almost gave up because I felt that nothing was happening. It was just more trouble being heaped on the head of Ruso, without anything being done about it. I'm glad I stuck with it, though.

Just what I needed! A fun book that mixes a bit of history, mystery, and humor. I enjoyed reading about a Roman doctor assigned to the legions in Britain. Life on the edges of the Empire has its troubles, and Ruso, the doctor, tries his best to avoid them. However the doctor has a personal sense of honor and integrity which means he won’t be successful. Trying to understand her place is Tilla, a clever woman of a Britannia tribe who, unfortunately, is stolen into slavery. Ruso, being in the wrong place at the wrong time, unintentionally becomes her master. The two have much to learn from one another. And there’s the fun for us readers.

Too slow paced...100 pages in and it's still character and world building.

Gauis Petreius Ruso, medical officer in the Roman Legion, decides to seek his fortune at the Britannia outpost after finding out his family is in dire finanical shape. Ruso is a bit of an unformed character and is very reluctantly drawn into the mystery but the humour and overall atmosphere were very well done. Hope to see more of this series
