When I first read The Talisman Ring, I was a teenager. I didn't fully appreciate it as I didn't really relate to the older couple, and found both Eustacie and Ludovic tiresome. Of course, the older I got the more I loved Tristram and Sarah and their dry wit and mature romance. I still find the younger couple uninteresting. Ludovic is a dunderhead: Loaded with Brawn and Bravery but stiffed in the common sense department. Eustacie was a bit easier to take this time because I listened to this book on audible, rather than reading it. Phylida Nash, the reader, made her sound exactly like Leslie Caron, whom I adore. It's still not my favorite, because of the lack of a London or Bath setting and thus, no glittering society for our couple to observe and interact with, but I certainly understand why it is many people's favorite and considered one of her most accessible works.

Light gothic romance fiction, among my Mom's favorites. Considerably better than the average gothic romance. Some of them are more like historical fiction, such as Simon the Coldheart. I read them from time to time when I was growing up.

Se Jane Austen è la mamma del genere rosa, Georgette Heyer è però la mamma del sottogenere ‘regency’, responsabile di aver reso tale epoca – la stessa in cui visse zia Jane – una delle ambientazioni predilette dei romance. Tuttavia la Heyer non si è limitata a ciò, scrivendo altri romanzi storici ambientati in altri periodi, come l’era georgiana…
Prendete una Catherine Morland francese con la testa piena non di scenari gotici, ma di scenari avventurosi, un nobiluomo ‘troppo vecchio per certe str******, una trentenne sagace con doti d’attrice e un contrabbandiere – pardon, libero trafficante -, metteteli insieme per smascherare il reale colpevole che ha portato l’ultimo, l’erede di un’importante casata, a venir ricercato dalla legge… E viene fuori la parodia di un feuilleton che per quanto riveli quasi immediatamente la soluzione del mistero intorno all’anello del titolo, non vi pentirete di aver letto (o ascoltato: Claudia Cassani ha fatto vivere queste pagine) per la vivacità dei personaggi, dei dialoghi e delle descrizioni, tale che mi ha fatto domandare: Georgette Heyer, perché ti ho ignorata fino adesso?

Delightful farce with a few twists and turns along the way. The usual good fun…

July/August Book Club Read. Once again a reminder that I do not love historical fiction. Once I got over the language of the time the story itself was actually quite cool and funny. Good murder mystery plot with kind of an abrupt ending. Worth the read if you like regency era!
