Phew! After a few slower volumes this one makes up for it! Briar has reached a new level of terrifying and the quick jumps from groups of characters made it impossible to attempt to stop once I started. The next time someone offers me tea (and I happen to holding a large sword) I am so pulling a "Thorn Thunk!". I'm always amazed at how well Smith is able to juggle humor and creep creep creeeepiness in these. This one in particular made me feel a little hopeless, which is amazing considering whenever you read epics, it's almost always obvious what the outcome is going to be. (Ex: Seriously did ANYONE think Frodo was going to not get rid of that damn ring, I mean come'on!) I hate I am insisting to read this in color, so I will sit here, right on the edge of my rump, until Vol. 9 in beautiful color winds up in my hands.

Phoney Bone seriously has a nose for gold! He's like a bloodhound for the stuff! I wonder if he is ever going to get all the gold/treasure he dreams of and go back to Boneville

The plot keeps thickining as we learn about what has happened to Althea since the fall of teh kingdom. The cliffhanger ending makes me want the next book so badly.

Now that I can see what the endgame is, I wholeheartedly feel that this is one the best "epic" adventure comics I've ever read; the story and characters are engaging and the plot is simple, yet deep. There are moments where the characters repeat exposition, and you can feel that this was meant to be read over a span of multiple years; nonetheless, that isn't really the fault of Smith, it's the fault of the medium.

This one lacked the humor that made the other books in the series so loveable. I understand that the situation in the valley is dire, and the world may or may not end, but I think that the book would have pulled me into the story more if there were some of the comic relief present in the other Bone books. Give me more Quiche jokes- I love them!

I really enjoyed this one thoroughly but my complaint is just that I thought the character arc of Phoney Bone was completed mostly after he captured the red dragon and saw the damage it caused but here he is relapsing back into being greedy. It just feels a little rushed and I wish his character was more fleshed out.
Though this one got such a low rating comparatively, it's only because of the character development of one character and how the plot kind of stops to give lore, however, that being said this book is so small it's like reading a part of a book so really I am actually even more excited for the last book now bc of the new lore!
