4.5 stars. The story's hit a lull, but it's still going strong. Not quite five stars, partly because the despair and hopelessness are paramount in this book, moreso than at the beginning because their whole life wasn't being ruined by their enemies and because they didn't know how big the evil was, and what an enormous army the Lord of Locusts had (allied with Pawa).

But it's captivating and engaging so I gave it five stars. It moves the plot forward and it's interesting, so what more could you want in a comic book.

The Bone saga continues, as Bone, his cousins, Thorn, and Gran'ma Ben finally reach the city of Atheia, where they join the throngs of refugees and attempt to keep a low profile. All is not well in the city, however; honoring the dragons has been outlawed in the city, and its ruler is determined to prevent anything resembling a challenge to his authority. Meanwhile, the Rat Creatures and their allies march on the city, and it's not entirely clear whether its defenses will hold.

I really wish these collections were longer! Each entry is great, but I'm always left chomping at the bit for the next installment.

Bone series, book 8.

The Bones, Thorn, and Gran'ma Rose have reached Atheia and look for supporters to battle the Lord of the Locusts. Unfortunately, Atheia's new leader views the royal family as heretics and plans to kill them the first chance he gets.

Phoney, meanwhile, is convinced that there is treasure to be found and sets out to find it.

And then Briar and her army attack the city...

The story takes a turn towards the end. It's a turn that makes the world a lot richer, and is in many ways a good preparation for the end of the story. Alas, it also feels like Jeff Smith didn't really know the whole story before he got going, so some things are crammed in at the end. Having a bit of this earlier on would have been great.

Still, a really nice and entertaining volume.
