Wonderful play, Othello's repartee with Iago really makes the whole play. After seeing the opera I cannot help but hear hear their songs of tragedy.

A good read is one where you want to slap the characters rather than the author. And boy did I want to slap some of these characters! The end, though, is breath-taking and I am now wondering when and where I can see it performed!

[second read, first was in 2011]
odd to read/watch through knowing the end already - watched the 1981 William Marshall along with a script read.
compare real-time loss of agency with immediate stripping in Verdi Otello - what does this say about respective ideals towards race? in the reverse, Verdi/Boito omit all but one of the racially-charged/animalizing insults. what does this say?
fuck do i love Shakespeare, but this isn't my favorite tragedy. less rewarding to watch a clear villain win.

3.5
I think a 3.5 is probably more accurate? When I hold it up against Hamlet it just doesn’t have the same strokes of brilliance for me.
Not nearly so many iconic lines or monologues. I think Roderigo was my favorite character and only because he’s kind of an idiot. I’d love to see someone modernize and satirize this one because there’s a lot of material here that I did kinda laugh at, but I wasn’t sure I was supposed to. (Roderigo’s “what should I do?”, “I’ll incontinently drown myself.” Was probably my favorite scene.)
There are some definite racist stereotypes and undertones at play. There’s a lot of misogyny, although I’ll give Shakespeare credit, the actual women characters weren’t portrayed as the way the men spoke of them. They seemed to me pretty well rounded.
In the end I was reminded a little of Romeo and Juliet and it just doesn’t feel that inventive.
Will keep reading Shakespeare. Hope to hit up Macbeth before the end of the year.
