Could not put this book down!! Fresh off of Dead Scared also by S.J. Bolton I started this and read it straight through. Not part of the Lacey Flint series, this was the author’s debut stand alone novel.

Chilling thriller in which the sense of dread builds exponentially. The twists and turns leave you scared to death for Tora Hamilton. Red herrings are plentiful and DS Dana Tulloch even makes mention of the term, which was quite clever. Tora, the protagonist a surgeon and Dana, a police officer are well crafted, likable characters, as are the others in the book.

The setting of the Shetland Islands adds so much to the story, that it is almost another character, in the style of Ann Cleeves or Elly Griffiths. The sense of isolation on the islands is made even more eerie by the hints and warnings of the danger that faces Tora. The story is based on some particularly gruesome historic legends from the Shetland Islands and that historic piece is incorporated believably with the modern story.

Having read two other books by this author, I continue to be impressed. I am especially impressed by the range exhibited by her. All her books I have read so far have been thriller/mystery types, however the characters are very distinct, the settings are varied and the plots are very dissimilar. A great read! I have one more book out from the library by this author and I am tempted to start it right away.

Apparently I should have read this prior to the Lacey Flint series since there is a same character in both this book and that series. It kind of ruined any suspense I had about that character since I knew what would be happening to her in the future. Sigh. That was kind of a disappointment. The book was ok. I learned a lot about the Shetland Islands and I always enjoy learning interesting tidbits in books I read. As for the actual location, I found it a weird setting. So bland and gloomy.

The main character was -again - just ok. Her relationships with her husband and her boss flummoxed me. I did not understand her motivations and in fact several of her reactions to their behaviors drove me nuts. The ending with her husband struck me as especially off-putting. Maybe it was supposed to be romantic? Huh.

As for the mystery itself, I guessed a lot of it early on. It really stretched the imagination, however. The entire concept was just weird and off. Are there really that many women seeking late term abortions in the UK? *shakes head slowly in confusion* The entire time I was reading this book I had an expression on my face like that of the character April in Parks and Rec.

I would probably have liked this book better if the protagonist hadn't been an idiotic, stupid, oblivious git. It's pretty obvious early on what's going on in this story, but Tora (she didn't like that she was originally named Thora, so she dropped the H O.o) keeps getting sucked in by people she KNOWS are untrustworthy. Add in the one of the most ridiculous conspiracy theories ever, and I have to rate the book 2 stars or lower. The only reason it gets that high a rating is that the ending was kind of exciting, though also unbeliveable.

Seriously, I was hate-reading probably the last third of the book, just skimming to see how it worked out.

I may have read this book in the past and mostly forgotten it. Some aspects seemed really familiar. The rest of it was pretty forgettable though, to me at least. I hate stupid protagonists. HATE. And this woman was supposed to be a doctor. Jeezopete.

Unglaublich schlecht geschrieben. Klar doch.

I like the tension in Sacrifice. There's tension about her boss, there's tension about her coworkers ... this sort of thing would be grueling to live through, but makes for a gripping story.

Around the middle of the book there is a big reveal about what is going on, which did kind of kill the spell for me. I must be more into figuring out what's going on than making sure justice gets served. The book carried on with the actual mechanics of how the thing was happening, which did maintain my interest. And more nail-biting inter-personal tension! I think maybe I was expecting it to be more of a mystery than a thriller, and in retrospect, given that it's a thriller, the pacing isn't so odd.

I found this to be a very inventive book, and I am now curious about what else the author has written!

I guessed a lot of the supposed twists and turns in this book, but it didn't hinder my enjoyment. A creepy tale based on the legend of the Kunal Trows, a human-like, patriarchal species with many gory secrets.

When obstetrician,Tora Hamilton unearths the body of a woman who had recently given birth, she has no idea of the terror she has uncovered. Murder, illegal baby trafficking and unlawful imprisonment are just a few of the atrocities being committed on the tiny Shetland island. Even more horrifying is her own husband seems to be involved.

Great debut novel, although not one of my favourite pieces of work by this author. Nevertheless, it is well worth a read!

The book comes with a gripping storyline, questionable characters, twists and turns, and everything else necessary to keep a person on the edge of their seats. From the start you’re curious towards the history of this strange murder, with your interesting growing ever more as the secrets start to unfold. Also for those people interested in romance the book contains aspects to keep such fans interested beyond the crime. As a whole it’s a great first book and a great place to start with her wonderful work.
