This book is a bit nostalgic for me. I distinctly remember reading it in first grade because it was the first time I'd ever gotten in trouble at school. The teacher was taking attendance, which I completely missed because I was so enthralled with Mr. Popper's Penguins. Needless to say, it was a fun trip down memory lane!

I kept thinking two things while listening to this: Why doesn't anyone know what penguins are, and does Mr. Popper possibly have an undiagnosed mental illness? (And no, I'm not making fun of mental illness- I'm saying that he makes a series of incredibly impulsive and reckless decisions with outcomes including financial hardship and jail time and leaving his family to go to the North Pole-- which made me wonder if his family and the penguins were even real?!) It's fine- kids would probably still like it, although spanking as discipline and the gender roles at play were disappointing to me.

I thought this was the absolute sweetest book, filled with imagination and such humor. I was giggling at various quirks and antics throughout. I’d actually say this is probably one of my favorite children’s books!
