If you're expecting to have a kid -friendly and -focused read, think again. A Spot of Bother is dark with a capital D. Dark themes, dark humour, dark story. Well-written, but very, very different to Haddon's first novel, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nightime.

A jaunty novel that deliberately avoids overstating the melodrama of a range of familial relationship issues and crisis , rather the author chooses to write with sensitivity and dry wit that helped endear the cast of complex and imperfect characters to me . The final section of the book plays out like a farcical stage play and is expertly managed by the authors hand . I found the explicit nature of some of the scenes unnecessary and slightly jarring within the otherwise  “ gentle “ tone  .

ugh! somebody kill the translator please....

So far, [a:Mark Haddon|1050|Mark Haddon|http://photo.goodreads.com/authors/1190997598p2/1050.jpg] wrote this book with a pretty good pace. A little bit slow at first, but you find yourself enjoying the changing story between the character. From George, to his wife Jean, to his rebel daughter Katie, to his gay son Jamie, back again to George, Katie, Jean, Jamie, and so on with random pattern.

Some part is graphically disturbing for me, but somehow after a few pages I managed to forget it and drawn back to the story pace.

The ending also satisfying, and suits well with the storyline. Every character almost naturally get their own closure for their problem.
