Flaws of characters a main focus? It's complicated

Was given a copy of this for free, realising now I would not have picked it up based off the blurb or the cover.
Completely unrealistic, nothing was believable or grounded in any sort of regular world that would MAKE it believable, I didn't root for any of the characters, and none of the twists felt authentic. Everything was pushed in for shock factor and none of it worked, to be honest. The writing felt like it was a quick dash to get a story written in two hours and the story was not engaging at all. To write a story with that much drama and for it not to be engaging is tough, but this novella definitely did it...
This book fell a little short in the middle due to the format of the chapters, but the beginning and ending were so riveting! For some reason, I'm a sucker for a book that fucks with my whole perception and knowledge in the last 100 or so pages 😂
This book is fucked. Read with caution. That ending though? Did not see that coming and I applaud the method acting of the characters, but the scenes and actions in this book were so dark that I would never recommend this to anyone. This book is crude, twisted, and so very dark. I'm embarrassed to say I wouls read the sequel where the roles are reversed.

This book gave me WHIPLASH. The embodiment of 'HA SIKE!' Talk about a plot twist?!
Alex Aster, kudos to you, my friend. I fell so deeply into the characters, especially Isla as the narrator that I was bamboozled right alongside her! I believed what she believed, I trusted who she trusted, and I distrusted those she didn't trust. I didn't get the majority of the twists until a page or even a paragraph before it was revealed, but I'm interested to reread this and see if there were more hints that I didn't pick up on.
I get these are free short stories on Audible... But still.
I feel like the moral was trying to be 'do what you love instead of what everyone expects you to do' - but it just sort of seemed like your classic pompous royalty story where the prince pays someone to do something for him lol
