I rated book 1 a 2.75 star, because as predictable as it was and though there are legitimate consistency gripes, it was extremely consumable. Just a really fun read, and it honestly made me curious for book 2. And this one was better! 3 stars imo.

I'm a sucker for angst, and there is a lot that the characters get into with each other in this story. I actually feel like it definitely could have been two separate novels because it's so ridiculously long, but I'm really happy it was only one. I think the plot itself in this story is TWICE as good as the first one, and where I felt like a lot of the characters in book one were basically several repeats of the same person, Yarros solidifies each one into their own pretty well in the sequel.

If you didn't completely dislike book one, I'd say book two would be a worthwhile read.

We see a lot more of Rayne and Hale together. You don't really get to see his billionaire, "at work" side other than being on a few phone calls in his home office, I wish  Michael's would show a bit more of his business savvy/ ruthlessness that we always hear the Davenports possess.

This book isn't quite as charming as book one, but it hits all of the feels for a quick read, and marks all of the right boxes for a contemporary romance. It's not as much of a "feel good" story as book one, understandably as there are a lot higher stakes and also just more stressful events happening in the story line.

Still, it was a good follow-up to book one, and the characters stay true to themselves. Definitely will read book three when it comes out!

Okay, 4 stars for me is high! I also rate romance/ contemporary a lot more loosely than I would a high fantasy or a sci-fi novel.

So with that in mind, this was such a fun book. I'm already started on book two. It wasn't the shortest read, but it was a nice medium paces book.

Rayne is funny and relatable. She's awkward and realistic and down to earth. She has some character flaws that are spoken about and obvious and not romanticized, which I'm appreciative of. She often, painfully puts her foot in her mouth, but she isn't a complete walking disaster. Just kind of a hot mess.

The other characters in the story are a great juxtaposition to the female lead. Lydia Michaels does a considerable job developing each character and building relationships between them. They're also flawed, and learn  ome growth throughout.

This was a funny and lighthearted read.
