professor challenger is one of the biggest literary douches i’ve ever encountered. i knew sir A.C.D. was a good writer but he’s also kind of a comedic genius. the description of challengers pointed feet when he advances? the scene with the tick? it’s h i l a r i o u s

a new perspective on post-apocalyptic fiction. enjoyed the telling on how history (and religion) is sometimes created by chance and circumstance.

stephen isn’t very subtle with his themes, but his storytelling is straightforward and compelling. you will want to know what happens to our main girl by the end

i’m sorry, those hedge animals are just not scary! oh no, a leafy lion or dog or bunny appears! i get it, it’s scary cause it’s supernatural but that’s just too goofy for me. didn’t enjoy that, also did not at all enjoy the descriptions of the female characters. every time a person is a woman there has to be an added descriptive sentence like: “she was wearing a short, seductive skirt” or “he could see her stocking clad, sexy thighs etc” and i would get it if this was from maybe one character that’s just crazy hot for ladies 24/7 but it’s all the time throughout the book.
what is well done and actually succeeds in being scary are the flashbacks to jacks childhood and his violent father, and him slowly becoming more and more like him. now that’s terrifying!
i’m a big fan of the movie and i did enjoy that this ended differently, i think the two versions are kind of different stories and the endings only fit that particular version

envoyed this a great deal. very immersive and an exciting world! wish i had read it when i was about ten though, then it would have rocked even more. some things hold the world back from being as fun as i’d like it to be, like the women’s position as non-wizards and how there’s no lgbt rep even though it’s so close i can taste it. love the world aside from that.

this did teach me a lot about basic physics and made me a bit more curious in seeking out more! fun! could have gotten a higher score but man i’m not sure if it’s just this edition or what, but it’s got some antisemitism. makes me queasy.

very disappointed even early on in the book. the author, despite claiming to explore gender expression, never mentions trans people. shes also declares that shes "not a dyke" without examining how her life as a straight woman differs from gay people. really thought that this would be a youthful mistake cleared up later on in the book but it never was. really disliked this book.
