"claim the stars..."

very YA. huge sanderson fan, have literally read more book from him than nearly any author (fucking crazy, right?) but, as much as i usually like his stuff, skyward wasn't quite my tempo. which is weird because more than ever i'm primped for a 'top gun' like novel but this was not that, at least it wasn't as fun as that.
some gripes:
  • the flight school scenes got to be really repetitive and tedious. i'd say "that's just how training scenarios in YA goes!" but no...i've read plenty of other YA books that were more engaging in this aspect.
  • for being one of his shorter books, i found the pacing to be weirdly slow?
some pros:
  • cool characters for the most part
  • genuine stakes

will probably start the next one soonish. i may not like the series that much yet but at least its short. i'm always saying that if you're going to be bad or mediocre, the least you could do is be brief. and these are that. here's hoping i enjoy starsight more!

“If you have something to protect…take up that sword.”

The volume in which Guts learns about the women’s wage gap. The volume in which I begin to fall in love with Casca. The volume in which Griffith’s mask begins to slip.

God, I love sports manga. Even the most, seemingly mundane,  extracurriculars can become exhilarating with the right mangaka on the pen. Mori’s (likely tragic) past is lightly hinted at in this first volume and I’m eager to see how he ended up like this—craving that self-destructive isolation. I’m invested…hope to see more gorgeous panel spreads as we continue as well!

Gorgeous art, and a story that just got more interesting as it went along. However, I think we’re missing some serious character development in the third act. I get it, it’s a graphic novel so it has to move somewhat fast but I don’t know…I’d have preferred Paul wrestling with himself and his “destiny” more before that final battle.

The ending is a great hook though, and I hope that volume two comes soon.

A short read, but nonetheless very fun. Once again Brando crafts a unique world/magic system and this time he does it while playing with a genre he’s never explored before. The wider Cosmere connections are surprising, but not jarring. Truly feels like everything is coming together and he’s become more confident weaving the various threads together. As a bonus, I think a lot of the book has great prose from him. You can tell that he was experimenting and having a blast.

Also? The art is gorgeous.
