A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness

Could this book be more boring? The characters are bland. Their interactions are bland. I'm so BORED. I give up.

Ugh. How can we go from cute and emotional to boring and unnecessary?
The first book was amazing. The only element I didn't enjoy was the godly war, which I found dull. I expected the war to be a bit more important here but I figured it would be balanced with the sweet romance.
But nope. I absolutely DESPISE the trope here:memory loss. So not only I had to cope with this war I never cared about but also I can't even have something to cling to now? I'm just sad and upset.
This sequel already felt unnecessary to me (the first book could easily have been a standalone if the godly war hadn't been a thing). Oh well..

I wasn't enjoying this sequel as much as the first book. Because of that, I decided to read spoilers of the last book to see where the series was going (I had a corruption arc in mind), and was completely disappointed with what I read.
I'm glad I saw these spoilers. I won't be continuing.

The Kingdom of Sweets by Erika Johansen
2.0
Oh no, I'm sad! The Tearling series is one of my absolute favorites, and I was excited to read something different from Erika Johansen.
If I loved the first 30% or so, my enjoyment kind of dwindled after the MC enters the Kingdom of Sweets. Everything felt more rushed and less fleshed out. I think I prefer when Erika Johansen writes her own stories instead of retellings. Or maybe I'm simply not a fan of the Nutcracker story.

I'M OBSESSED.
How am I supposed to wait for the third book after this ending? Give me more Will/James Sarcean/Anharion 🫣

Sword Catcher by Cassandra Clare

Cassandra Clare did excellently for her first non-Shadowhunters book! I devoured it. Loved the characters, the world-building, the plot, the tension between the characters... I'm sad I don't have the sequel right now.

I couldn't care less about anything or anyone. Was bored the whole time.

The Unmaking of June Farrow by Adrienne Young
1.0
Ehhhhh. This was one boring novel.
I felt nothing for the characters. June was a ghost in her own skin. I never really knew her or felt for her situation. The family curse among the Farrow women has zero explanation, which is weird to me because if you choose to have specific targets in your plot then there should be a reason. What's so special with the Farrows? Nothing. They made me yawn, personally.
