I read so many of this type of non fiction book - how to live in our bodies - that sometimes I feel that they’re not offering much new. Though that’s probably an unfair way to review, as I’m a voracious reader/audiobook consumer.

This is very good as an audiobook but I think I’d find it soporific as a normal book. I found it hugely motivating to get out the door and exercise! For that alone I’d recommend it highly.

Some interesting stuff here and I found the conclusion on the Kenyan hunter gatherer tribes entrance into the modern world to be particularly poignant.

I listened to the audiobook. The reader lulled me to sleep every night, but I still learned a lot and appreciated the topic.

It's a another well written book. it discussed the relationship between thuman evolution and exercises.

Giving a insight of how and why we are what we are, providing a lot of facts and researches. a great book that can combine with Burn by Herman Pontzer.

Though I already knew a lot of facts that he mentioned, either from the other book or learnt it. But its still a good read.

the only downside for me is that he did not explain or go deeper into benefits of resistant training. But he did mention the difference and have researches on comparison.

Enjoyed this one a lot. Definitely worth reading if you’re interested in exercise in general. Does a deep dive from an anthropological perspective on the concept of physical activity. Definitely grounding if you consume content about exercise and are tired of getting conflicting messages about how, how much, and why to exercise.

Excellent writing for a science book. Lots of evidence-backed information and an engaging narrative throughout. I found myself adding unprecedented quantities of new words to my vocabulary bin, and really enjoyed the shake-up of traditional exercise advice and the evolutionary perspective. As a sedentary person in a job best described as a complete sinecure, I have certainly been inspired to exercise, but can I keep it going and turn it into a habit?

Great book that analyzes exercise from a Biological anthropology perspective. Essentially boils down to:

exercise several hours a week, mostly cardio but also some weights, and keep it up as we age


But goes very in depth as to how strange and unusual exercise is from an evolutionary perspective, and how it requires overriding our innate instincts, and the benefits that arise by doing it today in our sedentary societies. instead of shaming and blaming people who avoid exertion, we should come from a more encouraging stance, similar to education.

A sound mind in a healthy body !

Tons of quality information packed into a concise 300 page book. It did not feel like I was reading a college textbook but it provided knowledge that I think I normally would have received only by taking a college level course. It was entertaining enough for me to actually finish in a relatively short amount of time; I usually get quite bored and tired when I read informative books like this. One of the few 5/5 stars I've given on Goodreads.

I picked this up because I've been bitten by the fitness bug this year: I hired a personal trainer and have been working out 2-3 times a week for the last 3 months, for the first time EVER in my life. That means I know next to zero about fitness. I've always been a big walker, in fact, my dream life is just walking all day, like Henry David Thoreau. Anyway, of course I am inpatient so in this 3 months, I am shocked that I am not now perfectly fit with a 6 pack and solid triceps (that is the underarm one, right?!) so I wanted to learn more about the process. The book overall was interesting, enough that I listened to it in a couple days, mostly while walking my dogs or cleaning the house. It didn't help me get more fit but overall just a lot of insightful anthropological information.
