This is the 4th book in the Ghosted series and I’ve read two of the previous titles which I thoroughly enjoyed. Unfortunately, this one didn’t work for me and I think largely due the level of Insta love that the story is built around.

“I’m in love with a man who doesn’t even know my name. After three years of seeing me in his house”

Thought we’d get to a point where the characters grow to know each other, but that’s all skipped over and straight to love.

“I thought it was love at first sight”
“You didn’t know me, you knew nothing about me”

Missed some of that magic from the earlier books. Enjoyed the small glimpses into the MMC’s PoV to bookend the book.

“I love you without reservation”

Did not finish book. Stopped at 70%.
Start this over a year ago (July, 2023) and I just can’t get through it. The whole premise was very flimsy and just didn’t enjoy it.

The first half of this book I really found it a chore to get through. Think my enjoyment was tarnish as I knew a large spoiler, and just wanted to get that over with so I could enjoy the book.

“Boys protect girls because they’re bigger”
“But Madeline’s the tallest one in the class”
“And that’s another problem. Her height is making the boys feel bad”

Beyond that, although I’m sure the depictions of misogyny, abuse and limitations placed on women, I found it extremely frustrating to read about. Mainly because I usually read as a happy escape from reality. And this aspect, just wasn’t enjoyable for me to read.

“Attack Zott’s self esteem…you’re just not smart enough”

Enjoyed the 6.30’s PoV as it was a cute perspective on the events of the humans.

“How could he protect a creature if she was in a classroom?”

And it was sweet that although Calvin is fairly blind to the hurdles Elizabeth faces, he’s probably one of the only decent man in this story.

“Failures by their nature had a way of being unforgettable”

Ironically, those who are meant to base their lives on honesty and charity, turn out to be the most corrupt and self centred.

The double standards make me want to throw my phone across the room.

“Support? But I’m a chemist…”
“No, you’re a lab tech. You’ve been out of the game for years now”

Glad she begins to learn how to deal with these boys in power. She came prepared.

“We had chemistry”

⁉️ If you had to name your child straight after birth or right now,  based off how you’re feeling, what would they be called?

I’ve lost track of how many times I’ve reread this novel. Sometime about the audiobook and story I find so easy to listen to. Maybe that it calls to my geek at heart, I just find this whole world extremely interesting. Can relate to being obsessed with a fictional world and wanting to know everything about it.

On this reread there were a couple of small things that made me roll my eyes or cringe, but overall found it entertaining (some derogatory name calling and the use of life sized dolls).

Interesting to see some of the concepts introduced in this story come to life several years later (virtual learning, use real money to purchase items for avatars)

“Clothing, furniture, flying cars…These items were nothing but 1’s and 0’s stored in the Oasis servers”

Wade does have some social issues, probably due to growing up in a virtual world.

“Are you breaking up with me?”
“No…we are not together, we’ve never even met”

And he was not a great friend. But it was all part of creating some conflict in the story.

Wouldn’t it be amazing to live in a world where all of this was free at your local library.

Am a sucker for a forehead kiss and a brothers best friend. However, the immaturity of the FMC and her brother dampened by enjoyment. Liza comes across as very emotionally immature and that is what drives a lot of the drama (leaves a party she went with him to, because he was talking to an ex. See, I’d expect that in a YA romance but not when they in their late 20s and 30s).

Don’t even get me started on the brother…a fully grown adult (a father and dr to boot), he is a walking red flag.

“I’ve thought about you so much since I last saw you that I don’t think there’s a single thing in the world that would have kept me away from you today. Not even your over protective brother”.

Bonus points for references to the greatest show ever, Buffy.

“I’m not this awful villain you seem to think I am.

Felt very Dramione and Beauty & the Beast coded and I would have devoured it in one sitting if it was so late.

Intrigued by the dynamic and romance between Lilith & Vale. As grumpy as he was, it was clear he was captivated by her. And just loved their interactions.

“Whatever you need,” he said. “My blood. My books. My knowledge. Anything. It is yours.”

The letters to each other were so dang cute. And although for a vampire, he was rather cute.

I welcome any letters you wish to send before your visit. I will help you however I can. If you want it. Vale.”

The world building and learning curve is fairly steep. Make sure to check out the glossary, which I missed until the end of the book.

Keen to explore the rest of this series.

🎄🎄 Christmas Magic

Thoughts
A light, short and (mildly) spicy  romance that, whilst set at Christmas, had enough story outside of the season to keep me engaged.

“That’s what this is. Sleep deprivation and forced proximity”

But I am a sucker for a brothers best friend romance.

“Because Nina Thompson is off limits. Her brother has hated every single one of her ex boyfriends…”

Be mindful that there is a small third act break up (which you’ll probably see coming), but it didn’t bother me in this story as much as others I’ve read. Did question  some actions considering how old the characters were meant to be (acting like teenagers when they’re in their late 20s/early 30s).

Enjoyed the progression from enemies to lovers and the secret keeping made for some great tension. May be a little Insta love, but I can forgive that due to the whole ‘spirit of Christmas’.

Christmas movies mentioned
Love Actually
• Bridget Jones’s Diary

A slow paced mystery

Thoughts
The initial mystery had me intrigue but beyond questioning every character, there wasn’t much plot to fill out this story. May have broken a new record for how fast I have my audiobook playing so I could get to some of the action/ get some answers.

I recognised the English accent straight away. There’s this old English tv show I’m obsessed with, Skins”
Way to make me feel old

Mini obviously has a lot of mental health problems that remain untreated. She is also clearly delusional regarding her relationship with Ben.

“I thought of all the plans I had made for the two of us. I knew he had felt it too. What had been between us in the part that night”

The story was a dual timeline, whilst assisting in fleshing out the story, it wasn’t also clear when these jumps were made, as it often happened in the middle of a conversation.

There was probably one big reveal partway through the book, but potentially I was too bored by the end to get much out of the final act reveals.

These blue aliens are such suckers for their women.

📚 dual POV
📚 Book 7 in an interconnected series

🌶️🌶️🌶️ (also slow burn)

Thoughts
The series is so wholesome whilst also focusing heavily on spice (this one is fairly light compared to earlier books in the series.

If you’re already this far into the series, you know what you’re going to get. A human stuck on an ice planet, where her body is strongly compelling her to mate with a chosen blue alien.
This was does addressed the matter of choice. Although, it’s fairly brushed over.

“But is what we have real or just a mating instinct?”

The most interesting part of this story was that the FMC, Lila is deaf. Her experience both on the alien planet and on earth added an interesting element to the story.

And continue to find the humour in the cultural clash between the humans and the Sa-Kui.

She gestures at me with one finger, and that puzzles me. Does she think I speak their hand language? I decide to memorize the signal in case I need it to talk to Li-lah.”

Just the way the aliens and inhabitants of Not-Hoth embraced her was the sweetest.

“You have many words to say. It is not your fault they do not know hand-speak yet. It is easy to learn, so there is no excuse for them to not welcome you as part of the tribe.”

Just what I love about the IPB series, light, action and spicy.
