Terrifying, and real. Too real. So good. Couldn't put it down.

Based on the amount of 4 and 5 star reviews this book has received, I was really optimistic going into this that it’d be a new favourite of mine. Unfortunately, it just didn’t work for me. I found the story to be extremely repetitive; I may have loved it if it was 200 pages shorter. I was also annoyed by a lot of the characters actions, and found some scenes to be just too graphic. This wasn’t a terrible book by any means.. but it was just okay for me.

This novel was definitely full of suspense. It kept me on my toes as I tried to predict how it would turn out. The only thing that kept me from giving it a higher rating was how dark it was. The sexual violence in the book made it a difficult read.

This book was intriguing but almost twice as long as it needed to be. It was the kind of book I wanted to come back to when I put it down, but it was also a little too full of gruesome details that left me feeling...well, icky. The first half has a mysterious edge to it that's exciting and interesting; the third quarter of it is rather drawn out - you've figured out the mystery at this point and are waiting for the climax and resolution, but instead you're just getting a lot of unnecessary, unpleasant details that don't advance the plot in any way. It picks up again a bit before the end. I would definitely read another book by this author.

If a book can give you the creepies, then this one is first on my list. I have read books where I am left on edge or wondering who dun it, but this one just made me want to check the security in our condo and make sure the dog would bark at anything other than the wind.

A very dark, very violent story about a woman in an abusive relationship with a seemingly normal psychopath. The story shows the evolution from fear to panic and how she adapts to her situation as she tries to escape and lead a normal life. If you have any sensibilities to violence against woman, then this is not the book for you.

this is the first book that ive genuinely enjoyed in such a LOOOOONNNGG time
its a gripping-edge-of-your-seat book about abuse
its written in an alternating past/present narrative that revolves around catherine bailey and its just so unsettling to see how she was prior to her attack and how she is now.
i felt very connected to the protagonist and at many times I became paranoid and scared of what might come up next...
this is a dark, horrifying and often disturbing, a sparing-no-details kind of book, its very well written and id highly recommended it

What a thriller!
I first heard about this book on Channel 4’s TV Book Club. Where has that show gone? It sounded really interesting but I never really got round to reading it until now.
I’ve read a few thrillers so far this year and I do enjoy the genre especially when it is as well written as this is. Haynes mixes great characters with mystery and some cracking prose.
The two timelines unravel so well together until they leave you breathless and fumbling from page to page to find out the end.
With lots of books I’ve read this year, I haven’t cared about the characters. In this case I cared too much for Cathy. I worried for her safety constantly. It was so vivid and paced so well there was nothing for it but to get dragged into the story.
I will definitely be looking out for more works by Elizabeth Haynes.
