The Secret Child by Kerry Fisher
4.0
A beautifully written novel that portrayed the struggle that Susie had to live with after giving up a child.
The tense of part one made it feel very personal, as if the reader was the child who had been given up - although this effect was slightly dulled by the change in part two, although I see why this was done.
The characters were complex and interesting. They provoked feelings of sympathy and annoyance at the right times, just enough to be involved in the story instead of detracting from the storyline.
The ending and part two was definitely the highlight of the book and was very emotional and the plot twist was unforeseen (although was very logical and hinted to quite a bit, looking back).
Overall, a great read and I would recommend this book to anyone.

The Escape by C.L. Taylor
4.5
An amazing book from start to finish.
There was no beating around the bush at the start and the storyline was suddenly in play from chapter 1. The pieces of the puzzle were slowly put into place and there were a number of things I didn't see coming.
The narrator was unreliable due to her illness (but when are they not in this genre?) but provided a unique point of view.
A couple of instances when the pace fell off but overall was thrilling and I thoroughly enjoyed this read and could not put it down!
I would definitely recommend for people who enjoy psychological thrillers.

Into the Water by Paula Hawkins

It took me SO LONG to get into this book. Although they worked in the latter part of the book, the many narrators and points of view made it hard to follow. It would have been better to be from three points of view - Lena, Jules and Erin.
In saying this, the second half of this book was riveting and exactly what I expected and nothing like what I expected at the same time.
There were a lot of twists and turns, some I saw coming, some I did not. The ending was interesting but left the reader questioning what they thought they knew.
This book was a bit all over the place but if you can push through the start and get your head around all the characters, it’s a good read.
I would recommend for people who enjoyed Girl on the Train (although a different book with different thrilling elements) and people who enjoy a decent thriller novel.

This was honestly just a heart warming, emotional, great read.
The characters were well-written, three dimensional, flawed and totally real.
The storyline was sad and almost made me cry (which doesn’t happen often at all!)
Honestly, I would recommend this to anyone who asked.
Just a purely great read.

Too Far to Fall by Shane Sawyer

This book was a really good read. It intrigued me by giving out little pieces of information gradually, just enough to spike the interest but never enough to spoil the twist.
The ending was a little rushed and a lot of dialogue explanation, which could’ve been executed a little better.
In saying this, I didn’t expect the ending and it was a good twist. I would have liked complete answers but then again a bit of mystery is fine.
Overall, I congratulate Shane Sawyer on a great debut novel and would recommend this read to fans of mystery/thrillers.

If You Only Knew by Cynthia Clark

Honestly, this was not what I was expecting at all. But I guess that serves me right for judging a book by its cover, hey?
A gripping novel that I was reluctant to put down and consistently wanted to keep reading.
The protagonist was infuriating but also relatable and you did feel for her a lot. I felt like yelling some sense into her many times, which just made the book all that more interesting.
The dual timeline at the start worked well for suspense, whilst giving the details needed to understand the second half.
I would definitely recommend this read!

Pretty Little Liars by Sara Shepard

This definitely wasn't the best book I've read but not the worst either. It lies somewhere in the middle. The premise behind the book is good; however, the execution leaves something to be desired.
There are way too many adjectives and descriptive that are irrelevant to the story. So much more could've been done in the 200 pages if unnecessary descriptions were removed.
The story has a lot of mature content - drugs, drinking, sex etc etc - but is written like it is aimed at preteens. It takes away from the story itself.
Pretty Little Liars is a long series and this is only the first book; however, I found there contained a lot of seemingly irrelevant information. It may come back to be relevant in the future, though.
I'm going to persist with the series as I'm curious as to what happens.

The Last Necromancer by C.J. Archer

This was honestly a good read. It was an easy book, intriguing at times. It’s a standard young adult fantasy novel, nothing too over the top or intricate but was still interesting.
The premise was good and the characters were interesting and multidimensional.
I’m looking forward to reading the next one.
